Gates for Stairs...any Recommendations?

Our new place will have two sets of stairs (3 level townhome.) Any suggestions on which gates to buy? Can I use a less expensive gate for the bottom of the stairs (being that it's just a barrier.) I know the top gate has to be super strong to prevent falls/breakthroughs.) I've seen plastic, metal, wooden... I want ones that are easy to open with one hand and operate smoothly. My daughter is almost 13 months old and is a walker/runner and a very curious child! Thank you very much!

So What Happened?

Thanks "mamas" for all your tips and suggestions! I ordered the "Evenflo Top of Stairs" gates. I've read quite a few reviews on them and they seem to be one of the best and most affordable. Thanks again!

E.,

I can't remember the brand, but I have a metal one that opens with one hand at the top of my stairs. It has a battery operated light the turns on as you approach, so you don't hit the closed gate in the dark. It also works as a great night light for the hallway/bathroom. We got it at Babies R Us.

go to onestepahead.com they have a ton of choices, we had angled stairs six feet wide at our old house and they had a gate that worked. They have good gates that you open easily and are installed with hardware for stability. Also, they have an on-the-go potty. It's a tiny little potty with super absorbent grocery bag like things that we use on car trips all the time. It's actually small enough to fit under the car seat and when I pop it up he can sit in the floor of the front passenger seat and use it easily.

Hi,
We have a wooden gate by Evenflo at both the top and bottom of our stairs. It is definitely easy to operate one-handed and we really like it. The only problem we had was installation because we have an old house with plaster walls (read: crumble when drilled) and baseboards that didn't let us put the gate as low as we wanted. I think that installation would have been a problem no matter which gate we chose so we are totally happy with the Evenflo Top-of-Stairs gate.

There are lots of options at Walmart.com. Just make sure you buy one that is "rated for top of stairs." I prefer, and use, metal gates.

I have a 3 level town home also.

at the top level, we ave a white metal gate that has a sensor light on it so that it goes of if he goes past also cos it is do dark up there (no outside light in the hall way)

I like this gate a lot.

on the main floor, we have two metal gates the same on this floor.

in the base ment as he isnt down there all the time we just have a temp gate that isnt screwed into the wall.

all of these gates we found at babies r us.
