I need a gate that will withstand my 2 year old who can open every safety gate in the house. Any suggestions? The gates I currently have are for the opening in the kitchen and also to keep them from going down the stairs.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I guess just going to deal with the gates that he can open. We are working with his younger sister 1yrs old how to function on the stairs and hope that it helps. I am sure at this point every gate that I come across will be opened by him eventually. Thanks for all the input!

Have you tryed the Safety First Gates there is one with a solid plastic front and one with the usul holes in it. But the gate is opened from the top you pull up on a very strong handel while holding a button down. it is hard for kids to use becaus eof how and where you have to pull. Good kuck.

My 2.5 year old can open every gate we've ever encountered. At this age, it might be better to teach your kiddo how to be appropriate in those rooms or to just not go into them. It's more work than a gate, but they have to learn at sometime and if they're already opening all the gates, it's probably an appropriate time now.

My son has been able to open the pull back spring, and lift up latch gate, but he isn't heavy enough to open the hands free, step on gate. Does that make any sense? I can look it up if you would like me too.

We LOVE this one.

Other companies make better looking ones if you want to pay a little more. IMO this style can't be beat.

Best,

I second the Evenflo tension gate. They are inexpensive (and you will be done with gates soon anyways) and if you place the lever on the outside, I don't see how a 2 year old would have the strength and coordination to open it.
On the downside, you will have to take them out and put them back in or climb over them, every time you need to go through - there is no "door" to open. They do not work for stairs, so you will need to find something else for those.
Good luck.

We got this on sale, but it was so worth the money! It's a metal gate that can be a six sided play pen to a customized gate that has attachments to the wall (if prefered). My son cannot move or open it AT ALL. Everytime I close it, he puts his little hands up top to try and open it, but it is nearly impossible. You have to push in a small button on the outside and then lift. At all of the joints you twist the bar to lock it in place. Best investment we ever made. It's average rating is 5 stars too!

Get the gate that has the open/close on the other side so he is unable to reach over and unlock it. I am in Ontario, Canada but I would think that you would have a K-Mart, Wallmart department store. They carry them and they cannot be unlocked on the side that your son can get it. Its the opposite and if its tight against the door frame you can extend it just a little more and it locks real tight. Even I had trouble getting it open.
Good luck, my grandson was just like your 2yr old and he couldn't open it.

The gate we have used successfully is The First Years with pedal/step down latch. It takes quite a bit of weight/pressure to release the gate. And even at 4 my little girl couldn't get it released. The one we have is a pressure mount (they have the wall-mount as well) - we have used it in a number of locations (except not on top of stairs b/c it is pressure mounted). At 5 years old, my daughter can finally open it (although not every time still) - we now use it for the laundry room doorway as a way to "kennel" the dog over the rainy season... This gate has gotten it's fair share of use and we got our money's worth!
