Well my son is five weeks old and for the past month probably he is always passing gas but you can never smell them just hear them. me and my mom never really thought anything about it. But recently for the past two days i think the passing gas has a strong smell to it and he fusses alot when he passes gas during his sleep or when he's awake. He also hasn't had a stool in the past two days. Should I get him some Infant Gas relief drops? Or what should I do? I hate to see my little son's face frown all up, him get red and try squeezing and just a smelly poot comes out!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So he finally had a stool on Tuesday. And boy was it a stool. But it was a dark green, brown w/ some yellow color to it and really smelled up the house! After that he is only passing gas every once in awhile. I think it was because I was trying to switch him to Good Start(cuz i saw that commercial saying it helps babies digest it better) and after that he was all gassy, but once I started getting him back on Enfamil he finally had that stool and now is alot better. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR RESPONSES!

If you're breast-feeding, I know that days between stools are completely normal. My daughter was 5-7 days between & my son is 3-4 days between. Both my kids were really gassy. You could hear my daughters from across the room, and you could always see her going (by her straining faces), but neither are constipated. My son makes the faces too. I don't know why they make the face, but it doesn't seem to bother him. Hope this helps some.

I would call your pediatrician first and see what they have to say, because he is so young.

Good luck

Call your pediatrician. I am sure there is something to really loosen his stool. Also check what you are feeding him. Formula, unfortunately, can stop up a baby. If you can breastfeed that is the best!

I realize that most folks are going to recommend calling the DOC and that being a first time mom has you a bit on the "safer side"... but I would try some gas drops, and leg stretching -- you know bending their legs up and down and scrunching them up a bit. The excerise is good for him regardless. Another thing our pediatrician said to do was take the dark karo suyrup and put a few drops in the bottle.

Good luck.

Hi K.,
I would contact your son's Dr. and let him about your concerns. I would also try switching his formula if he is on formula. My son was gassy and constipated when he was around that age, we switched him to Enfamil Prosobee. It worked for us. Just an idea for you. Good luck. Hope everything works out for you.

The gas drops might help, our little guy passed gas also. Are you breastfeeding? They say it could be something that you are eating. You might try eliminating things from your diet to see if it makes a difference for him. Don't worry, it will most likely resolve on its own.
Good luck

Congratulations on your new Little one... I have a 10 week old. A lot of people have told me that they get the upset stomach because they are so new to food and their body is getting used to it. I am breastfeeding so I have to be really careful with what I eat. My daughter wasn't pooping either, when I called the Doctor they told me it was normal especially for breastfed babies because their body was absorbing everything it was taking in. I had a hard time beliving this. I went to the chiropractor, and he told me it wasn't normal and recommened a couple of things. First he told me to uit eating cheese and all dairy products. Within a day or two of not eating dairy, she was pooping a few times a day. The second her recommened was taking probiotics, which can even be given to the infant in small doses. I Prefer to take it and let her reap the benifits through my milk. Probiotics introduce healthy bacteria into the stomach and colon. I think the brand he recommended was Medigenics which you can get at whole food stores or Pharmica had it as well. I also use milicon which works well, she loves the taste and I haven't been able to find any negative feedback on it. Then there is what my grandma recommends... Old wives tales LOL, but she say to put a little spit in their belly button, I have tried it, and she really did start to pass gas and feel better. Hope this all helps... I am a first time mom as well, so this is all very new to me as well. One thing I would recommend also is taking your baby to a chiropractor, One that specializes can do wonders. My baby wouldn't turn her head to the left very much, I really hadn't noticed till he pointed it out, now she has full range of motion, sleeps better and just seems happier overall. They also have a machine that can look at her nerve stuff and if there is any blockage, then they can fix that, I have heard that this will help to ensure your baby doesn't end up with ADHD... (which I think is over diagnosed) but the craniel sacrial massages really are amazing!!!

My little one was the same at that age. A friend recommended Colic Calm which you buy at www.coliccalm.com and it instantly helped her! I give it to every new mom that I know. I also had it checked out by my pediatrician and he ok'ed it as well. It truly is amazing stuff and it is completely natural-no funky stuff in it. Gas drops had absolutely no effect. It really helped with her bowel movements as well. Sorry to go on but I really can't say enough good things about it! Hope this helps-good luck!

My little one (now 3 months) did that too. The doctor said that at that age it is completly normal to not have a bowel movement for up to 10 days. My son would go a whole week before he would go. And when he went he loaded it! I did give him gas relief drops from tim to time. The doc told us that his body is absorbing so much of the nutrients that he won't have a bowel movement everyday. It only lasted for like a month that way and now he is back to every day or so giving me that surprise. Hope this helps.

My youngest was like this, too. She was exclusively breastfed. If your son is not, consider experimenting with the formula. If he is, it is within the range of normal to go many days without a bowel movement. I never used Infant Gas drops. Here's what we did:
leg exercises - do bicycle motions
tummy rubs - clockwise, I think
change his position - put him on his tummy, in a boppy. That really helped if my daughter was trying to actively push. Or put him over your knee to put some gentle pressure on his tummy.
a homeopathic remedy called alumina - my husband couldn't believe how well this worked for her!
Also, if he spends a lot of time in a swing, carseat, infant seat, etc. hold him more. Wear him in a sling. Get him moving, into different positins and not just lying there for long periods (obviously let him sleep for the appropriate number of hours, though!).
Good luck. Two days was nothin' for us, so I wouldn't worry too much. And, if you are still worried, call your ped.

Hello-

First question- Are you breastfeeding or bottle? If bottle/formula feeding, it may have something to do with the type of formula he is taking. My doc told me that at around 5-6 weeks, babies start to poop less and can go quite awhile without having a bowel movement. Just call your doc and let them know. Our doc's office has nurses there to take calls and answer questions, so if you have that option, call. Or you can call the 24 hour nurse through your insurance and they can answer questions too.

I am a mother of two girls. A five year old and a ten month old. I breastfed both of my kids so i really had no problem with my kids having gas. If you bottle feed it might be the type of bottle you give him. try to give him the bottles that you have to put a bag in the bottle and squeeze out the access air. other than that you might have to take your son to the doctor. They might make him feel more comfortable. I don't like to see my littles ones suffer i try to make them feel comfortable.
