Gas at 5 Weeks???

I have a 5 week old baby boy. I think he has gas pains real bad. His face turns real red and you can feel him pushing. He then lets out a toot (I mean a huge toot. A man size toot). This even wakes him up in the middle of the night and he cries. After he lets it out, he goes back to sleep. I have tried Mylacon but it doesn't seem to help a lot. I am nursing him so it is not a formula problem. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Thanks a bunch!

Try putting a small receiving blanket in the dryer. Let it get pretty warm and fold it up and wrap it around his belly. Leave it on for 10 or 15 minutes, then repeat a couple of times.

Go get Little Tummies drops! These work wonders!!! My daughter was very gaseous at that time and this was all that would help.

Look at your food intake...often times there is something that you are eating that makes him gassy. I would cut out milk products and minimize your gassy foods - broccoli, beans, etc. Good luck!

Lay him on his back & move his legs like riding a bike- sometimes that relieves the pressure. Also- put a warm washcloth on his tummy or lay him across your bare tummy. That always relaxed my DD.

Does he burp well when you feed him? If he isn't burping well, the trapped air continues through his body and comes out the other end. I'm not positive about that, but I heard it somewhere.

My daughter had similar issues which then led to colic....long story short, we found out she is milk and soy intolerant. So since I'm breastfeeding her, I've had to eliminate all foods made with milk and soy (but I've slowly added some foods back in now that she's almost 10 months). It made a HUGE difference in her tummy discomfort! Who would have know that it was in almost everything---chips, bread, chex mix, and of course the obvious--milk, cheese, yogurt. So maybe try eliminating dairy and see if that helps. It usually takes about a week to get it all out of your system.

I'd also put a call in to your pedi and explain your son's symptoms. Enjoy your new bundle of joy!!!! They grow up quickly!

I breastfed both my boys and they both had gas. Basically I had to be really careful about what I ate. I got a list of foods that are known to cause gas and did my best to avoid them. It sucked because there was no carbonation, no potatoes, onions or broccoli! But the sacrifice was well worth it, lol!

Hello S.,

do you think he is constipated? are you consuming "gassy" foods? or carbonated drinks? are you drinking milk? if he's having gas problems, check what you're eating =) are you drinking enough water? I remember when my daughter was born, I drank some (non-alcoholic) sparkling grape juice. big mistake, she had really bad/painful gas! in summary, check what you're eating because that might be the culprit. make sure you get your pro-biotics. Congratulations on your new baby and good luck! ~C.~

Make sure he isn't consitpated (sp?) and if he isn't call your doctor about giving him Mylanta. I had to do it with my son but I don't remember the dosing. I think it was a 1/4 of a teaspoon but I don't want to tell you wrong. It worked lilke a charm. The baby gas stuff did NOTHING for my little man! lol

You do want to be careful about how much anti-gas meds you give him as it can cause hard bowel movements if he gets too much!

Good Luck!

I agree with some of the other posts on laying him on his back and "bicycling" his legs. Also, your diet has a huge impact on his tummy, too. Kind of keep a list of what you have eaten and see if there are days it's worse than others.
Good luck!

ITs probably related to something you are eating... they basically eat what you eat...

my son was the same way. he would scare himself with his toot along with whomever was carrying him. i would warn people around me that my baby has really bad gas....because everyone would think it was me ;) anyways, the think that worked is Dr. Brown bottles(target or babies r us). They changed his life and mine.

Could be constipation. It really could be the breast milk. A friend of mine couldn't eat potato chips because the baby got colicky. Who would have thought about potatoe chips? So I would bet it IS the breast milk and something that you are eating that is not on the gassy- foods to avoid list. You can give a baby mylanta and 1/4 tsp is the correct dose. Keep giving him the mylicon drops, and burp well, exercise his little legs. If none of that works then I would go to the doctor about colic. Because if none of these things work then chances are it is colic. My new baby sister is 7 months old and you described her to a T.
And she was breast fed also. It was colic. 2 days after being on the prescription medicine and she was like a whole new baby. couldn't ask for better. And she continued to be breast fed. now she is on some solid foods and is doing fine. Don't hesitate to go to the doctor if none of those things work.
