If it is a dead mouse (which it very likely is if it's coming from the dining room you don't use), you'll need an exterminator. ew. :(
We recently moved into a new home.
This has now happened a few times, I come home and our house smells AWFUL. Like something between a stinky poop diaper and a gross bag of garbage, all mixed together. I seriously cannot figure out where it is coming from.
House is clean. Dog is not pooping in the house. Have ruled out a hidden poop diaper or snack left somewhere to rot.
When this happens, it's most potent in the dining room, a room that is hardly used and has wood floors, a table and chairs and that's it!
UGH! I goggled it and sounds like we might have a dead mouse in a vent or something - but how do you figure out what and where the problem is? I'm so grossed out. Anyone ever experience this and who do I call to get this fixed ASAP?
Thanks!

It will fade in a few days and won't smell anymore if it's a recently dead mouse. It is decomposing and once it is finished it just lays there dried out and does not stink any more. It could be between the walls and if you start having some guys come out to seek and find it they could spend months tearing open your walls and never find it. They might know where it is the whole time but never "find" it so they'll keep making money.
Oh I so feel your pain. We've had dead mice in the walls before. HORRIBLE smell! Not sure what to do to fix it (It was my parent's house - They took care of it), but I just wanted you to know that you are not alone.
If its a dead mouse, it will go away but you could use an odor reducing plug in air freshener while you are waiting. Don't get the perfumed ones, the glade one for strong odors is pretty good.
Sounds like a dead mouse in the wall to me. EW :( I know your pain. A townhouse we rented once had a terrible mouse problem and this was a common occurrence. The only thing you can really do is leave the windows open as much as possible and that will help to dissipate the smell a little. Other than that I would sprinkle carpet fresh or baking soda on the carpet where the smell seems the strongest, those help absorb the odor too. Good Luck
You could have your vents cleaned if you think something may have died in there.
