My daughters ped. says that she has one on her wrist. Only time it seems to bother her is when she notices it or if I peek at it. If she's playing or otherwise busy, she doesn't even know it's there. It does seem to be getting smaller. Dr. said that if it starts to really bother her, he would drain it, otherwise-leave it alone.

I had to have one removed from my left wrist about 6 months ago. Prior to surgery it was very painful and would swell up in a knot about 3 inches high!! I went through surgery because I could not stand the pain any longer and I also have carpal tunnel in my wrist. During surgery the doctor said the cyst was wrapped several times around the tendons and growing into my muscles- he had to twist and pull to remove it. He said it was one of the rare cases- he actually seemed excited over it. I was in so much pain after surgery- my wrist was swollen and I could barely move it for almost 2 months!! I am allergic to most pain meds so I had to suffer through with OTC help. Even though I am right handed I didnt realize how much I depended on my left hand.
I'm sad to say the cyst has already returned- even as I am typing this it is about 1 1/2" wide and sticks out about 1". There is no way I could imagine having surgery again!!
This is not to say of course that your daughter will experience the same result. I'm sure that like many other surgeries, some people have went through this with no problems whatsoever!
Good luck to her!!

I've had one now for several years. I had it drained once; but, it filled up again. It's not too large and not too noticable; so, I don't really worry about. I wouldn't have it drained again. If anything, I'd have it removed if it became bothersome.

I have had a cyst 3 times in one wrist. I had surgery the first 2 times as it was sooooo painful. This last time it eventually went down but I had to refrain from lifting anything too painful. The surgery is outpatient but painful. However, for the first 2 times it was worth it.

I was a hairdresser for years and when blow drying became popular I gained one. Went to the doctor and he ordered from the nurse a book. He hit it with my wrist bent and it was gone. I later got another one and that doctor gave me a cordizone shot in emergency as it hurt. When I went back to my reg doc he said he would not have given me a cordizone shot unless it were really necessary only as a last resort. I have never had them since. G. W

I would not mess with it unless it is extremely painful and prohibiting movement. It would also depend on the age of your daughter. I definitely would see an orthopedic specialist that specializes only in wrists/hands. Paul Ellis, MD ###-###-#### at Baylor Dallas is the best around. He is a phenomenal surgeon and wonderful with both adults and kids. Those can really hurt--I hope she feels better soon!

I had one and although it was not on my wrist it was on top of my right hand. It was not painful just annoying and unsightly so I had it removed. It was outpatient surgery with a quick recovery. The bad part for me was the enormous amount of drugs they gave me to keep me under.

I had 2 on the same wrist when I was a child. They did surgery the first time to cut it out but they did not get all of it out so when it grew back, they had to go back in and do surgery again. But the good news is that when they went back and cut all of it out, it never grew back. I also have had no other issues with this wrist(other than my on foolishness in my older years!) But as someone who has had one, i would suggest surgery to help your daughter out.
Good luck and I will be praying for you!
Jenn

Dear Lonie:

Yes, I've got a ganglion cyst on my left wrist that's been there for two years or so. My doctor said draining it would be a waste of time; it would just come right back. My doctor's advice was just live with it unless it's causing problems.

I'd say, especially since a second one is showing up, take your daughter to the doctor and get his or her opinion. The usual advice is if it's not causing pain or problems, don't do anything about it.

I used to have on on my right hand when I was managing a restaurant and used my hands a lot but since I have gotten away from writing and using my computer it has diminished. At one point a doctor told me that it was a ganglion cyst and we could remove it if I wanted to but it wasn't doing any harm to me. So in the end I left it alone and it's gone back down and doesn't bother me anymore.

I had one removed in the doctor's office. The second one on the same wrist I just mashed and mashed until it burst. That was about 15 years ago and I've never had another one.

I'm laughing at the book story, I used to get these and my mother called them "bible" cysts because they used to whack them with a bible to get them to burst! I did have a couple that went away after I accidentally bumped them into something but the last time one came up I had it drained and it hasn't returned (10+ yrs). Unless it is causing you major pain, I wouldn't have surgery.

My husband had one removed-very simple surgery and full recovery to his hand. Good Luck but do it soon as it will keep growing.

I'm with Lisa P ..... my dad used a Bible to smash his and it never came back. My DH went to the doctor and, lo and behold, he recommended the Bible thing. He said when you burst them, the body absorbs them and they don't come back. No use in draining them, they fill back up quickly. They could do surgery, but it was costly and painful. Later that night, I heard a loud thud - and then another. I walked into the living room and he had actually done it. It hurt, but he took some Advil. The next day he was fine and they've never come back.....that has been 15 years ago. Our DD 5 YO got one on her left wrist (she's left handed). She worried with it constantly and it was irritating to her. She'd scratch it and try to mash it. Papa talked her into letting him 'put the Bible on it.' She agreed. He sat her down at the kitchen table with the Bible, had Lilli-Kate stretch both arms out - hands facing up. He told her to close her eyes and count to 10. On 4, he he whacked it. It startled her so, that she stopped counting and opened her eyes ..... she got tears in her eyes and Papa hugged her and said what a big girl she was and gave her some ice cream. That was it. The wrist looked a little tiny bit bruised for a couple of days, but she ever missed school and didn't have a problem writing or anything. That's been 9 years ago - it has never come back. Made a believer out of me .... and her!

Good luck.

I had them when I was much younger.. I am not 50 now and had one on each wrist when I was in my early 20's. I had them both removed, but one came back within the first year. I have it still and don't have any problems with it. I would say if they don't bother her, to just leave them alone. The one that has grown back is almost the same size that it was when I had it removed and I have never had any pain or problems with it.
