Funky Smelling Jeans from Costco?

Has anyone purchased jeans or jean capris from Costco over the last few years? I have tried a few Calvin Klein pairs. I used to purchase them a lot when I lived in Seattle / California. In Phoenix, I only bought linen. Now I'm back in the cold and buying jeans again and they STINK. Really, even after several washes there is this funky, chemical odor, probably the fabric preservatives used to keep the rats/bed bugs from infecting the clothes while traveling across the ocean.

However, last night, while sitting with my son reading, I had a blanket over my legs, and when I pulled the blanket up, my son asks, "What is that smell?" It's those Costco jeans.

I returned a pair awhile back due to the bad smell, and the return clerks were already aware of the problem. I'll return these too.

But one pair I rather like. So has anyone successfully removed the funky odor?

Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

likely Formaldehyde. complained to Walmart about their boys black faded glory brand stinking to high heaven and they never returned my calls. I washed them in vinegar, after soaking them in Baking soda water over night. Then rinsing them in hot water. Smell became better, but it stayed a few washes.

From what I understand, it's formaldehyde. Nice, huh?

I once had a pair and the smell was there, no matter what I did. I got rid of them. I certainly didn't want them on my skin, far less polluting my house w/ toxic, cancer-causing chemicals.

P.S. Mine were form Target, Mossimo I believe. When I was checking out, the male cashier kept saying to me, "Make sure you wash these before you wear them, ok?" He must have said it 3 times. He was kind of young, so I just kind of brushed him off and smiled (of COURSE I wash everything new before wearing it, why does he keep telling me this?) Well, after the stench never went away, it made me reflect on the kid telling me over and over to wash the jeans :)

I got a pair of jeans from Kohls a while back, and they smelled like that too!! I can't tell you how many washings it took so that I would not be smelling it while I was just sitting on the couch like you. Now I only smell it occasionally when I have just washed my jeans and I hang them up to dry. I hate that! I figured it was just the ink in the jeans since mine are really dark.

Do the jeans have any stretch to them? I noticed that some brands with stretch tend to have a burnt rubber odor that never completely goes away. It seems worse the darker the color too, black being the worst. Since the odor comes from the synthetic part of the fabric, there is no way to eliminate it.

It's a common problem.
It has to do with the dye they are using these days - usually the darker the jeans the worse the smell is.

You can try several ways to remove the smell:

I add a little bleach to each and every load of clothes I wash. I start the water, add a splash of bleach, add Gain detergent, then wait for the water to fill at least half way. I add the clothes, black, red, colors, whites, etc...by color for that load and then let them go. I hardly ever had any spots from the bleach if I am careful. This sanitizes the load and removes bacteria and/or smells left over after a wash or two.
