Are any of you crazy enough to chair an enormous fund raiser/gala at your childrens' school? I'm one of those people, you ask me to do it, I'll do it. I've been asked and I am deciding/mulling. Oh, and its the school's anniversary year. No pressure. What has been your experience with these huge events? Are they a headache or have you had fun doing it? I don't need fundraising ideas, The event is in place, but the school needs a chair to head it up.

What can I do next?

Learn to delegate.......you can't do it ALL by yourself and you need volunteers. If no one steps up for a job, dont just decide to do it yourself... then you'll end up with it all. Also, remember that EVERYONE will not be happy. You will have some negative nellies.

Be positive, delegate and have fun.

I am former President of a cheer booster club where we brought in around $20,000.

Currently on the board of the boosters at the Sr high level dealing with monies in the area of $100,000 plus.

It is a lot of fun if you share the responsibilities

I wouldn't, but it sounds like you could, esp if you only have one child. Read your previous question. This might be a good opportunity for you to "earn" your financial aid.

The magnet on my bulletin board above my desk is my daily reminder --

The definition of Stress is when your mind and gut say "No" and your mouth says "Yes, I'd be glad to".

Know yourself, your family, your outside demands and your support network. Will you be a good match for this particular project and would this event be a good match for you with your current life demands. Can you make a difference, but not be fully in charge? Can you help the school in other ways? At the end, what will you have been given (what did you earn/gained by doing it) and what will it have cost you and your family (time together, healthy dinners at the same time, happy and relaxed you)?

When you are quiet and by yourself do you know the answer to this question? Follow your gut, it knows.

Good luck.

I am currently organizing a fundraiser at my son's preschool. It is a lot of work and definitely more stress than I would have liked. If it's not something you enjoy and you don't have a LOT of free time on your hands, I personally don't recommend it.

you sound like the kind of person that would enjoy it, if you even have to think about it at all you'll be ok, Those of us that can't handle it would just run screaming.

I've been invited to go to a local pizza place on a certain day (any time that day) and say the name of the group when I place my order. Then the group will get a portion of the profits.

Also, Fry's Food and Drug Store here in AZ has a Card that you can prepay and buy. You just use it to buy groceries and 10% will automatically go to the school. You don't pay extra but just load the card and buy like you normally would.

I did one last year, one of those wrapping paper/candy catalogs. It wasn't awful. I did get volunteers to help with counting the $ (we did two big counting nights, I did the last minute orders myself). I also had volunteers help on the day the truck came to sort the orders by alphabet and to work the pick up table.
I handled all the questions, complaints that came up, as well as figuring out which class had the top %s (we had incentives) and I sent reminder notices out about the pick up time. Good luck! It wasn't awful.
