Fun Things to Do on the Weekends - Even Better If They're Cheap!

What does your family do on the weekends? We have our 6 yr old son and a new baby, and we are looking for fun things to do as a family on the weekends. The baby can go anywhere, anytime, so we are mainly looking for something the 6 yr old will enjoy. We live in an area without much culture, so most museums and other points of interest require a travel of at least 45 miles. We do have a Children's Museum that is quite fun, but we are tired of going there constantly! Due to the recent weather, we have played a lot of indoor games. We are ready to get out of the house and go do something indoors, just not at home!

I will take any and all suggestions!

Thanks in advance.....

What can I do next?

Create some fun games at home, like treasure hunts or a maze to crawl around! Your 6 yr old could make a secret hidout with blankets and pillows, haveyour 6 yr old create clues for your husband when he comes home from work and hide something. This could be an all day adventure!

i always took my daughters for walks, hikes, in parks or the forest, wherever its natural, we collected fun things like leaves, neat rocks, wood etc to make crafts like collages and cards. Any weather is good for a walk!

Hi!

Check out your local library.

When we lived in Arizona our local library had a wall of free things to do. We were able to get free tickets to local museums, zoos, and events.

Hope this helps!

is there a nature center nearby? Ours is great free and full of activities and animals, High schools and local theater groups will put on shows, Some will be appropriate for a six yr old.

Here in Illinois the Forest Preserves have many beautiful parks and some of them have Nature Centers, where you can learn about local plants and animals. We often take a walk in the forest first and then go to the Nature Center to warm up and look at all the information they have. The boys love to go there.

do you have a dog? cuz dog parks are the best :) everyone can bundle up and dogs don't care if it's cold (a LITTLE cold, at least) we also take a hike around the mall when the weather is bad and the cabin fever gets to us. also visiting toys r us (if your child isn't the "i want i want i want" kind) can be a blast.

We are in Michigan and it is mighty cold here too. My kiddies enjoy making tracks in the snow, shoveling (to make a pile not to clean the drive way), movie night, making forts. Making cocoa or visiting the local shop for cocoa.

We do a lot of crafts. My 6 year old enjoys drawing above all things and is in the process of making her own "biggest picture in the world" Like in Ramona and Beezus. Our 4 year old lovess painting bird houses.

We visit the bookstore or the local library. We go to the mall just for the play place and occasionally, ride the carousel.

Do you have a pottery place nearby? My 6 year old also enjoy painting ceramics.
