Fun Halloween Dinner

I was thinking of making a fun Halloween dinner for my family, which includes an almost 2 year old with a milk protein allergy. Any ideas? Even if they are not milk free, I can always try to work around it, but am looking for something that is toddler friendly. What do you eat on Halloween?

What can I do next?

Every year we make the hot dog mummy's, a pot of chili, and velveta shells and cheese with red food coloring (to look like brains). My parent's and my sister's family come over for an early dinner, we go trick-or-treating, and come back to my house for hot chocolate. Such a fun night! :0
I also saw a recipe similar to the hot dog mummy's but, it was a meatloaf wrapped in strings of bisquits to look like a mummy.

Mummies, it's what my kids love to call them. It's just hot dogs wrapped in crescent rolls.

We usually order out for pizza. One of our local pizza places makes pumpkin shaped pepperoni pizzas. My kids are older now, but they still love to eat it!!

We're having a Halloween dinner the Sunday before Halloween, no time Wednesday night, a school night. My little guy, 3.5, saw a ghost cupcake cake in a magazine and that was the start of our plan.

My BIL is making Eyeballs and Brains aka Meatballs and Spaghetti, putting olives in them for the eyes, my 11 year old nephew will love it! Last year he made a mummy meatloaf, just shaped it and covered it with strips of sliced cheese and used olives for eyes.

I'm making healthy snacks/sides to go with it all..here's a couple of sites you can check out for ideas and recipes, or do a search for fun spooky foods, and decide what will work for your family.

Growing up we always had something hot and filling for dinner , probably because Mom and Dad wanted to counteract the effects of the goodies :)

If you want to go all out, try Nadia G's Halloween Bash on the Cooking Channel website. The severed arm is super creepy. But perhaps too much for a 2 YO. But there are some other good things.

I also heard that if you put mashed potatoes in a icing bag, you can make ghosts on a plate and use sliced olives for eyes and a mouth! Just whip the potatoes and don't worry about adding milk.

It was always our tradition to do something warm and hearty in the crockpot, a soup, stew, chowder, meatballs or chili, with warm crusty french bread or cornbread and butter on the side.
You can keep the crockpot on while you're out trick or treating, as usually you are ready for seconds when you get back home :)

I always do Mummy Dogs on Halloween...that is a hot dog wrapped up in a crescent roll mummy style. I'm sure that they probably have milk of some sort in that dough though...I suppose you could make your own dough or you could maybe use biscuit dough. I know one of the Grands biscuit styles does not have egg or milk in it b/c my cousin is allergic and eats those. You'd have to read labels, but that might work, at least for his!

I also do pumpkin pasta. It is a cream sauce but I'm sure soy or almond milk would work fine instead of milk.

Pumpkin shaped pizzas...use biscuit dough and shape it like a pumpkin (flatten it out and pull up a little piece for the stem) then I cut out turkey pepperonis in little triangle shapes and my kids decorated their own faces. You could do it without cheese and just do sauce and pepperoni, although since it's the same color, maybe you could use black olives instead? That would still be fun and spookyish!

I also use cookie cutters in ghost and pumpkin shapes and make grilled cheese sandwiches, but again, you could PBJ or even ham or turkey. I make tomato soup to dip it in!

That's pretty much my Halloween week menu, so hopefully something will work!

Make something quick and easy but healthy. You could make a pot roast the day before and then hot beef with whipped potatoes or as sandwiches add a veggie and or salad. To make the hot beef warm any leftover roast and shred using a mixer, just put the mixer in the middle of the beef and it will shred like magic. I suggest a deep bowl or it may go all over the place. Then add in the leftover gravy, heat use over whipped potatoes or bread.

You could also make sloppy joes with a veggie.

I like a healthy but simple dinner for halloween. You end up interrupting yourself to answer the door and the kids get so much candy they want to eat it all (LOL) so starting them off healthy is good.

Once I made mac & cheese which I put green food color in, and added carrots. It tasted good - but made my stomach turn trying to eat green mac & cheese. lol

Oh, also, there is this pizza shop called "Papa Murphys" you buy the fresh made UN cooked pizza and bring it home to cook it - one year they had a special on pizzas in the shape of pumpkins with strategically placed pepperonis to look like the face. It was cute.

For Halloween, well my kids are in school, so they have to do all homework before we go trick or treating. And some friends will be over too that evening, so with that in mind, and because I don't wanna go nuts COOKING and rushing around that evening... we are having a pot luck and getting take out. Much easier.
