Full Day Kindergarten Vs. Half Day Kindergarten

Our school district is considering implementing a full day kindergarten program. I'd like to hear from moms or dads that have or have had a child in full day kindergarten. What were the pros and cons? Please share your experiences and offer any useful comments/suggestions you might have. Thank you.

So What Happened?

Thank you for your replies. It has brought some things to light for me that I hadn't yet considered. I especially appreciate the feedback from the teachers (more teacher replies found on KK's 6-29-08 post essentially about the same topic).

I think a full day of kindergarten is very hard on the little ones. It might be helpful for working moms, or teachers who need full time employment. I have subbed often for kindergarten and maybe it is just because i am a sub, but the little ones are still almost babies. Some people really applaud full day kindergarten. I wish every mom could stay home with their children for a lot of years. I don't agree with it. They still are needing naps, they are tired and they love their homes and the security it provides for them. Now I know that is not true for all of them, but I do not believe in it. That's all.

i posted a similar question a while back. in our district you have a choice, however 99% of the children go full day. my issue with it is, is it to much for my child? I cannot answer because next week will be our first full day/week. orginally i chose 1/2 day, i just thought it was to much for my child. BUT my son really wanted to go and be with all his friends so we are letting him try full day.(we have the option of switching)so i'm not sure yet. good luck

I’m shocked to read that, even in half day Kindergarten programs, a teacher is so pressured to teach via structure that there is no time for “plays or art projects.” In my opinion, this is a detriment to the healthy development of children. (And I am certainly not blaming our teachers.)

Children are active, concrete, experiential learners who acquire information and knowledge with all of their senses. Studies have shown that: Movement is the young child’s preferred mode of learning; Lessons that are physically experienced have more immediate and longer-lasting impact; The integration of body systems allows for optimal learning to take place; The more senses used in the learning process, the more information retained; Play is linked to greater creativity and problem solving, improved reading levels, and higher IQ scores; There is a strong correlation between the time children are most playful and the time when the brain is making the most connections.

Forcing a 5 year old to sit in a seat for structured instruction is contrary to the child’s natural learning process. And a full day of this would be exponentially worse than a half day. Let’s give our children what they need to learn – less seat work and active learning. A half day of active learning at school would be absolutely wonderful for our children.

Finally, we should not be using our schools as a daycare replacement. Asking a highly-educated teacher to fill the role of a daycare provider is a terrible waste of talent and time.

I don't have anyone in full day kindergarten, but I can tell you that I sure wish they offered it. The only con that I could see is if your child still napped (I am extremely jealous of anyone who has a child nap beyond 18 months so I don't want to hear it if you do!!!). I was "assured" by our district that the children in the neighboring districts that have full day kindergarten are taught the same exact thing as the kids in half day kindergarten but that is exactly what worried me. We only go for 2 1/2 hours a day. I was shocked when I learned that.. we spent more time in preschool per day than that! The neighboring districts go for the full 6 - 6 1/2 hours a day. I would imagine that the full day districts then are to spend more time teaching each thing, as well as teaching it different ways.. i.e. if they are learning about caterpillars/butterflies..you can read about it, see them on a diagram, actually see them in person with an activity, or make them with paper, etc. etc. in a 6 hour day. Whereas if you are stuck with 2 1/2 hours, you are only able to see it taught one way. And then you are cramming the same information into their little heads into such a short period of time, there isn't much time for much else that is important in the learning process (social activities, etc.)
If you have any say in the matter, I would definitely be all behind the full day program.

I was a Kdg. teacher before staying home with my kids. Our district had a full day program and a 1/2 day program. You had to qualify with a basic entry test. The kids who scored higher went to the 1/2 day class and the kids who scored lower went to the full day class. There was NO parent choice.
A benefit of 1/2 day is shorter day for kids who get tired, but overall I think full day would be better. I taught the 1/2 day classes and I had very little time for "fun" things. B/c the kids were only there for 2 1/2 hours we spent our entire day doing academics...we didn't have a lot of time for things lilke plays, art projects, a recess break, independent play, etc. Our day was very structured and went by quickly, but I really felt my kids missed out on a lot of stuff that the full day kids got to do.
