I was wondering if anyone knows if full-time kindergarden exist in the suburbs. My friend's children attend kindergarden full time but it is in the city. I have not found one in the suburbs. My son is 4 years old and because how his birthday falls he will be in preschool again next year and what I pay for preschool is really hurting.I thought I would be able to get rid of that bill next year, but no such luck. Anyway, I am wondering when he gets to kindergarted will it be full time because all I see is kindergarten classes are from 8:30am -11:00am. What do working mothers do? I am in Darien.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all the moms who gave me insight on Kindergarten. I called the elementary school in my neighborhood, (I was told I really couldn't branch out to other neighborhoods I had to put my son in my district depending on the address.) Either way, the elementary school he is suppose to go to has extended hours, meaning I would have to pay for him to stay later than school hours until I come out of work, which is fine since it will be about half of what I am paying now. Thank you all so much.

I went with Bobbie Noonan's childcare. They have an educational program that is full-day. I can't say enough about it. My son is now in 4th grade and is being promoted to the gifted program. I know it is because the foundation he was given at Bobbie Noonan's.

Hello Frances!

This might not be of much help, but College of DuPage has a full time kndergarten class at their Glen Ellyn location. The cost is $220 per week which is costly imo and the child must be 5 by September 1st. The link to their info is http://www.cod.edu/NewsEvnt/newscommun/newscommun.htm#kin....

good luck!

There are a couple of school districts that serve Darien. One other M. said that 61 had full day K. District 66 (Elizabeth Ide, Lakeview, and Prarieview) does not offer full day K, but they do have before and afterschool care available. I am not sure how much it costs, but you could call the district office to find out.

Also, in your quest to find full day K, remember, you have to live in that district which would mean that you would have to move. Most school districts require that you prove residency. Good luck on your search.

District 204 in Naperville has a full-day kindergarten in select schools this year and will be offering it in all the 204 district schools in the fall 08-09 school year. Certain schools will also offer 1/2 day kindergarten for those parents who choose that route BUT I believe you are responsible for transporting your child to the 1/2 day school locations if you choose this program.

Hope this helps!

There are several full time kindergartens in the southwest suburbs, Hickory Hills, Palos Hills, Justice. I just know that because I used to work at a few of them.

It is hard to find full time kindergarten because in Illinois Kindergarten is not mandatory by law. Seems silly since just about every child goes to one!

My oldest is JUST finishing up K now, and I am a full time working mom. What I was able to do is put in a request with the school district for him to attend K where his sitter lives, instead of where we live. It's the same district, but different school boundaries. That worked out REALLY nice.

Another option is to find a sitter, or center within your school district. Centers usually have transportation to / from the local schools... and a sitter might either be on the bus route or willing to pick up your child...

Oh and Places like Chesterbrook or some other centers have ALL day K, but usually not the school district...

Good luck! Email if you need more help!

Hi Frances,

I see you live in Darien...that may be just perfect if you are in the Cass district. We lived in Darien for awhile, and sent our 1st to Concord school. At the time, they had extended day kindergarten (gets out at the same time as 1st through 4th). They also had BASE (Before and After School Experience) which was from about 6:30 or 7am before school and 6pm in the evening. It was a lifesaver for me, as I was a single mom at the time. BASE did have a cost attached to it, but as I recall, it wasn't terribly expensive. They also had a preschool right there in the same school building and it was NAEYC accredited, which is very unusual in the public school system. I don't know what all they have now, since it's been 6-9 years, but it's worth a look, since you are right there in Darien. We were very happy with our experience there, which was from K-2nd grade. Hope this helps!

Good luck, I know that pressures of daycare!!! my five year old is just finishing kindergarden in Downers grove and then goes to kindercare the rest of the time and I can't wait till 1st grade. I want a 2nd one but we have been putting it off until he's out of daycare to try and afford the daycare for the 2nd kiddo. Daycare is sooooo expensive. In this are in the public school their is no full time kindergarden I have found unless you want to go private.

Frances,
I'm not sure where Darrien is (we just moved to the Chicago area last year), but we live in Mokena which is 30 miles southwest of Chicago and we have the option of part time or full time kindergarten. My daughter's birthday is in November, so this is her 2nd year of preschool and I definitely wanted her in full time kindergarten. Frankfort also has full time kindergarten.

Hope this helps!

Hi! My name is K., I live in Lombard, IL and our school just started full day K for this upcoming year 07-08. The school's name is Manor Hill. It is a great school, we are very happy with it so far - I have 3 other children that went there and one entering kindergarten in the fall. A few schools out here did have full day but had to cut it out due to funding. If you would like any more info you can contact me at ____@____.com Good Luck!

I live in Darien also. If you are in the Darien School district #61, we have full-day kindergarten.

My daughter went to Fairview school at 75th & Fairview for kindergarten and 1st grade this year.

For next year, they have sold Fairview and are consolidating into 2 schools: Mark Delay for Kindergarten through 2nd grade and Lace school for 3rd-5th grade.

Hope that helps!

Hi...

We live in Lockport and our children attend St. Joseph School which has a full-time kindergarten, and I believe it's the only one in our area.
