hey moms- here is my dilemma i cannot give my son fruit without him getting diarrhea. even one apple will give him loose stool. he eats bananas which are fine but any other fruit even juice watered down 3/4 is like an instant laxative. he loves to eat fruit especially apples. on thanksgiving he had 3 strawberries, 2 slices on cantalope, 1 piece of pinapple and an apple and he had loose stool followed by diarrhea every diaper about 8 times the day after. now i know that is a lot of fruit for a 2 year old but that was a one time deal(until christmas) i have to keep him away from the fruit then. lol. on average one apple goes right through him about 20 mins till poopie diaper. i dont want to ban fruit altogether but too much poopie = diaper rash even though i load him with balmex and change diapers almost immediately. i am at a loss on what to do. HELP!!

What can I do next?

Hi J.-

My son has similar issues, but only w/ specific fruits-like grapes. He loves them and asks for them every night. I asked the dr. at his 2 yr checkup and she said it was fairly common. Now I try to limit the amount he eats in a sitting and I like to give it to him on days when I make a 'binding dinner' for him, such as rice. He loves the rice and when I follow it up w/ fruit, he has normal BM's. I hope this helps!

have you tried pairing the fruit with foods that usually "stop you up" like cheese or cottage cheese or ???

personally i would contact the pediatrician for suggestions.... it sounds to me like he may have a sensitivity to fruits. have you tried giving him just certain kinds to see if it is fruit specific?

J.,

A two year old should be able to eat a piece of fruit without diarrhea. I would speak to your pediatrician, and if he doesn't have any answers, a pediatric gastroenterologist. They might have an answer. Then again, they may not. My neice has the same kind of thing, and cannot tolerate even a juice box without trouble. After much testing, thy told her parents that she has "toddler diarrhea" and will outgrow it as her digestive system matures. I would get your son looked at, though, just in case.

I would combine the fruit with rice (maybe cereal) or banana. Those foods are binding.

My son is 19 months old and he was getting really bad diarrhea from an antibiotic. The pediatrician recommended a supplement called Florastor. It is an over-the-counter (but behind the pharmarcy) supplement - not a drug - to help treat diarrhea. Of course, speak to the pediatrician about it. In general, I've heard that children should not be "treated" for diarrhea because it serves a purpose to their body. But in certain circumstances, it may be needed (my son's reaction to the antibiotic, for example). So perhaps your son's situation would be an exception as well. Just a note, the Florastor is very expensive! Also talk to the doctor about Pedialyte, if you haven't already. It won't treat the diarrhea itself, but will help your son replace the nutrients and electrolytes he is losing with the diarrhea.

Best of luck, hope this helps!

Hello! Since rice is binding, try giving him a rice cake with his fruit, they might neutralize each other and make him more regular. Try the rice cake first so that it is already in his tummy before you give him the fruit. Hope it helps!
