Front Door Peep Hole

I just noticed tonight that the peep hole in my front door is cracked. Any ideas on how this would happen? I live in a small 12 unit apartment complex (upstairs end unit). Building from the 50's, so I am assuming it's been around that long, why would it crack now? And how?? Ideas or experiences?? TIA! Btw, I check it every night (ocd, haha) and it wasn't like that last night.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Marda P, I'm not afraid of anything, LOL..., I've just never seen a peep hole crack before :) Yes, I was referring to the glass part. And now with some of your responses, I have come to the conclusion that it's probably from the heat (and age). The door gets the afternoon sun, and here in FL (and up on the 2nd floor) it gets HOT! Well over 100 degrees. So, that and it aging, I'm guessing that is the reason. Thanks mamas!! And, thanks Marda for the giggle :)) Oh, and I look out of it every night to make sure my front light is on etc.. :)!

Peep holes can be screwed in and replaced. I would just ask for a replacement. If it is old, anything could have happened to it.

How would a peep hole crack? Weather. Time. If the actual GLASS cracked? Wear over time - I know - how does it get "worn" I just look through it!! :) The weather, opening and closing the door can affect it.

Yes, it's odd to have enough thermal stress (weather) to crack it - but it can happen.

Talk with the building manager - they should be able to replace it or the door.

Good luck!

Not sure if you are saying the glass is cracked, or the frame around it. If it's a wood door, perhaps changes in temperature or moisture loosened the seal between the door and the peep hole glass? Could a delivery person have brought in something - like furniture or something else bulky - and knocked into it? Is the door so old that someone could have slammed the door and jarred something loose? Just a few thoughts. If you rent rather than own, I imagine the landlord or building super would be obligated to repair this.

Maybe somebody walked by and tapped it really hard...I doubt it's anything to get worked up about.

It cracked now because it is old.

What are you afraid of? No one can get into your apartment thru a peep hole or put anything into your apartment since it's just cracked. Thus, I can think of no reason for someone to have purposely cracked it. Unless you're feuding with someone and perhaps they were angry when you didn't answer the door and they hit it. Even that is no beg deal.

After your SWH: I'm glad I gave you a giggle. Guess I'd spent to much time lately reassuring people, including myself. If this had happened to me, now I think, I would've wondered too.
