From the Car Seat to the Stroller - Coat Question

Ok - so our 1 year old has some delays (not sure that's relevant, but may be).

My question is this...... He has a jacket for days when it is like 40 or above. He also has a "winter coat". I've read not to put them in the carseat in their winter coats, because they are too puffy and you can't get the straps tight enough to be safe. Also - he gets REALLY hot during car rides longer than about 10 minutes.

We got one of those sherpa car seat zipper thingies. Like a sweater that zips them up in their car seat and is all cozy. I love it and it's awesome. We didn't get a car seat / stroller combo (for many reasons) and now he's pretty much too big and heavy to be lugging around in his car seat anyway.

I have a couple warm, cozy blankets that I have been using when he goes to his stroller or I quickly put on his jacket or coat. But now that it's getting colder, I'm wondering about that transisiton......

What do you do to put your kid in their coat when the door is open and it's like 8 degrees out?

What can I do next?

I love the three in one coats. I put the lighter layer on and zip it closed. Then I put the outer layer on DD, which I can easily strip off when she's in the car. The few moments it takes to put her into the car don't freeze her. When she was a toddler in a convertible seat, I would put her in fleece and then wrap her in a blanket. Blanket came off, kiddo was locked in, blanket went back on over the straps. Same with a stroller.

SO it sounds to me like you're doing the right things with the blankets and such and I woudn't overthink the transitional moments.

You put the coat on, a minute or two of cold while you get the coat on isn't going to harm him :)

I never obsessed about coats. A few moments of cold isn't going to hurt anyone. I went out and started the car on cold days, warmed it up, and carried my toddler out in a blanket. Coat in the car. If they needed their jacket or coat when we arrived wherever we were going, I put it on them in the car before we got out. Carseat is always in the right back passenger seat so I could turn around and access them (front facing). When they were rear facing, I just climbed in the back seat and did whatever I needed to do. You could also get in the rear passenger seat and close the door. You don't have to stand there with the door open.

There's nothing dangerous about a few minutes of cold, since a 1 year old can regulate body temperature that's not how kids get sick, but a miserably overheated child in a car is no fun.

You're right that safety in the car is primary, so if you have a zippered attachment designed for that purpose, great. Otherwise you can often tuck a lightweight blanket (particularly the kind that traps heat in the material, like an afghan, can be tucked into outer straps or even behind the seat with a clothespin.

For going into a store, I would just keep him bundled in the blanket until I got inside (whether carrying or using a stroller), or even plopping him in a shopping cart that's outside in the parking lot, and not worry about the coat. For the stroller, you can also put the coat on backwards - put the arms in (keep his hands inside the cuffs, not out in the cold, and you won't need mittens). Then just lay the rest of the coat on top like a little blanket, no zipping in the back. It also works if you put the coat on that way and hold his back against your chest while you walk inside to get a shopping cart. A hat is plenty for the 60 seconds it takes you to get inside.

Coats are more important for sustained time outdoors, like in a stroller or on a kiddie sled. Then you need the full regalia because they aren't active at all (so they need more than you do because you are walking and they are not).

I would just put my kid's coat on before I took them out. They were cold and happy to help get it on. The few minutes the door is open isn't going to hurt them.

I don't put anything on them in the carseat. I don't wear a coat when I drive so I keep the car warm. They'd be too hot if they had all the stuff you're talking about.

When I turn off the engine I get out, put on my coat, go around and get kiddo out of carseat and put their coat on them.

I would buy a "Bundle Me" stroller blanket. It's the same concept as the car seat one you described but designed for a stroller.

If you warm up the car, put your son in the car seat sherpa/zippy thing you described and then transfer him to a stroller with a Bundle Me stroller blanket, you no longer need the heavy coat.

He'll be more comfortable and it's one less item of clothing to lug around.

Here's the link on Amazon:

unless it takes half an hour to put the coat on, kids are fine for the couple of moments it takes to bundle 'em up.
