my friend just found out that her daughter has chicken pox, and they were just here for easter. my daughter is up to date on her shots and i am 6 1/2 months pregnant. what is the possibility of either my daughter or i of contracting this nasty thing? i have had them twice before and am also up to date on my shots. any info would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

If your daughter has had the chicken pox vaccine, she shouldn't get them if exposed. If you have had the chicken pox twice, you shouldn't be at risk either. It is unusual to get them more than once. Usually that only happens if the first case was a slight one. There is a blood test your doctor can do to see if you are immune to chicken pox. Maybe that would ease your mind.

Well as far as your daughter if she is going to get them there is no stopping it. With her shots being up to date she should be fine, if she gets them they should last about a week and the doctor will give her medication for them.
As far as you go, you shouldnt get them again, but I have seen it happen, you might want to call you ob/gyn and let them know, and see what they say to be on the safe side!

If you have had them twice and your daughter has had all of her shots, then you should not get them. Chicken pox are nasty, but usually once you have then you should not get them ever again.

I agree that the chances of getting them are slim. However I would talk with your doctor. I have heard of kids getting chicken pox even tho they were immunized. Your immune system can be bolstered with gamma globin for some diseases. I don't know if chicken pox is one of them.

And illness causes most difficulties for the fetus during the first few months. But I'd discuss my concerns with the doctor if I were you.

Just because you had the vaccine doesn't mean you can't get them. I had the vaccine as a child and I still got them. If she does get them she probably won't show signs for another couple of weeks. That's how it was for my kids anyways. The vaccine is supposed to lessen the effects. Talk to your Dr. Good luck!! :)

Glad to hear things are going well for you and your daughter! For future reference as a military wife, the flu vaccines we got did not have mercury in them. I know the military orders vaccines without mercury and you can ask your provider to be sure. I have heard it is especially important in pregnancy to get vaccines without it but not good for anyone. I have "heard" some of the cheaper places that offer them in public have the mercury but you can ask. :) Best wishes and blessings to everyone!

I think if you have had chicken pox before and are up to date on your shots, you should be ok. I have never had chicken pox, and I had the shot 10 years ago, at 28. My youngest daughter who had the shot at the same time, at 1, has been exposed and has never gotten it.

The first thing I would do is be calm. You don't need to stress out yourself over something that may or may not happen. Ask your doctor about chicken pox. Expossure time, symptoms, % on you getting them again, your daughter getting them. Ask if there might be something else you could get from them. My father was older when he was exposed to chicken pox and he got something called shingles from it. I'm not trying to worry you but you need to go to the ones who know all the answers. YOUR PROVIDER. On a different note please tell your husband that my family thanks him for defending our right to be free. May God watch over him and keep him safe. Let us know what you find out. God Bless to you and your family.

Despite what doctors will tell you I've personally done enough research on vaccinations to say that they do not protect anyone from getting a sickness, we are all susceptible at any given point in time. Additionally vaccinations have mercury in them as well as animal byproducts which does more harm than good to our little ones. If you've had chicken pox twice before I would think you would have built a good immunity up against getting them again but you never know. I would say that your best protection against them is eating healthy and getting enough rest and exercise. Lots of veggies and stay away from sugar (weakens the immune system) are my best suggestions.

If I weren't working full time I'd bring my 8 month old over to expose him to chicken pox so he builds up his immunity to them. That's what moms used to do.

I do not know if chicken pox can have any effect on a pregnancy, I'd call your doctor on that one if you haven't already.
