Friend's Baby Boy Has Hernia

My friend is asking for advice, on a herniated belly button. Does it get worse/bigger when the baby cries? The baby is 6 weeks old, and is starting to cry harder. Will it correct itself, or does it require surgery?

Thanks
J.

My son had a herniated belly button and it ballooned up and became larger over the first 3 months (it got to the size of a quarter). Yes, it would change size at times, including when he cried. I remember thinking "this is NEVER going to shrink down!" But it did start to shrink before 6 months and kept shrinking until it healed on its own. I think it was completely gone by 12 months or so. We were advised that most cases (not all) resolve themselves without surgical intervention. My son now has an "outie" but looks totally normal!

My daughter had the same thing and it just corrected itself. Her doctor will look at it at the 2 month appointment and be able to assess if anything needs to be done. And yes, when they cry it does pop out a lot more!

My 14 mo. old daughter has a small one that sticks out more when she cries. It's not so bad, but I really hope it corrects itself just b/c she's a girl & will be wearing a bikini someday! My nephew has a bad one...it stuck out a full inch & was about an inch around. It's a little bit better, but still sticks out a lot. If it was my son I would inquire about getting it corrected, but the parents say the dr. says it will correct itself by the time he's 5 or so. He's almost 4 and it's only a little better. I think it depends on how bad it is, but I'd get a couple of opinions. I'd also wait until 1-2 to really worry about it.

My daughter had a herniated belly button that corrected itself by 1 year. I avoided letting her cry very much so the muscles wouldnt be under the added pressure but I dont know if that made a difference.

My 8yr old just had surgery to fix it and we didn't even realize he had one until a few months ago. MY 18mo old also has one but we need to wait to see if it will correct itself with time.
Good luck to her.
