Go to webmd.com and search 'happy spitter'. That might be what your child is experiencing. Ours was a happy spitter from 3 - 10 months. So glad that's over!
My son is now 6 months old and has been spitting up A LOT since he was born. My doctor says that since he is gaining weight there is nothing wrong and that he probably isn't spitting up as much as I think. Well, he is spitting up as much as I think. When he was one regular formula he would spit up the entire bottle undigested.. now he is no lactose free formula and still spits up a lot. He is now eating food and never spits up, but if you give him a bottle it will come up again. Does anyone has have this problem or give me any advice?

Hi A.!
My son has been spitting up like a fountain since he was born! The thinner the liquid the worse it was/is! I stopped breastfeeding him exclusively and we started mixing breastmilk w/ formula and he started doing better, but still spitting up quite a bit. Between that, the hiccups, wet burps and his occasional tears of pain when he would burp...we speculated that he had reflux. Now mind you, he was gaining weight just fine and wasn't always in pain, but a few times was enough for me. He has been on Zantac since and it helps him with the pain but not the spitting up. Since he's started full time formula (AR), and solids, we have definitely seen a decrease- but there are good days and bad. I am hoping that once he is sitting up more things will get even better. In the meantime, my washing machine has become great friends with about 10 burp cloths a day!!! :)
You're not alone! But talk to your doc if you're concerned.
Good luck!
Hi A.,
My son spits up a lot, too. He has since he was born and he is now 7 months old. I too have noticed that he doesn't spit up as much when he eats baby food or a rice cereal bottle. I tried everything to stop him from spitting up...soy, mylicon drops (before, during and after feedings), burping him 2 to 3 times during a feeding, even his doctor put him on medication...but none of it worked. But, he does gain weight and is a very healthy boy. Some children just tend to spit up more than others. As long as your child is gaining weight and is eating baby food with no problems, don't stress yourself out about it. They all grow out of that eventually. Some just have it worse than others.

What kind of delivery did you have? SOmetimes difficult deliveries can cause trauma to the musculature around the spine and the spine itself which then decreases the nerve input to the digestive system. thus the non stop spitting up no matter what you do. Try a chiropractor and rice milk. If you need a recommendation for a good chiro for kids in your area let me know. I'm in VIlla Park but if you want something closer I can certainly recommend a good one.
Hang in there! My 2nd son was a spitter. Sometimes right after he drank or sometimes an hour or 2 after he ate. He gained weight and was healthy. He also developed nasty ezcema. Both cheeks on his face were always extremely dry and an angry red color. I belive part of it was because the doctor told me to start him on rice cereal at 2 months old. So, a different doctor thought the spitting up and the nasty case of ezcema might be lactose intolerant. So, I tried the soy version. It gave him bad constipation. Eventually, he was put on Nutramigen. It's costly and stinks but it worked. Plus, when he started solids he outgrew the spitting up.
I'm going through it again with my 3rd (he's only 2 months old right now). He's worse than his older brother in terms of spitting up (thankfully he's not experiencing ezcema and I refuse to start him on solids until 6 months). I even asked the doctor if he might have reflux because he would arch his back as well and be tightly balled up. He was drinking anywhere from 4 - 6 oz per feeding. The doctor had me keep it to only 4 oz per feeding eventhough it might mean more times I would have to feed him. It did reduce the amount and times he would spit up but he still spits up. I just have to wait for him to grow out of it. They make formula to help with the spitting up (I haven't tried it) where they put in rice starch. It's the same concept as adding some rice cereal into the bottle with the formula and giving it to your child.
Good luck!
Hi A.--I do have some info. that I think would be helpful to you, but it's too long to cut and paste here. If you email me I will forward it to you. There is help!
P.S. I have a 6 month old grand daughter--just started sitting up by herself and lots of "talking", so-o-o fun!
Sincerely, J. K.
