Frequent Periods Every 18-21 Days

Hi Mommas! I had my third child, a handsome baby boy in Feb. this year. I am still breastfeeding him. I started having periods again in June. My first period after that was 27 days later, the one after that was 21 days later, and the last one was 18 days later.
With my second child I experienced something similar, periods every 21 days. I asked my OBGYN about it, they did not seem concerned, they said that my hormones are getting back to normal and that it may take awhile before my body adjusts. They said that I would be extremely fertile because of having periods so close together...they were right LOL! I got pregnant with my son when I was breastfeeding my 1 yr old daughter.
I would just like to know if any of you have been thru this, and how long it took before you started having normal periods. I really hate that they are so close together, because I am on my period for a week, and then off for maybe a week and a half before I start again. Thanks!

What can I do next?

My son is now 14 months old. It took over a year for my periods to somewhat straighten out. I would go for 4 or 5 days and then every other day for 4 or 5 days. I was told this was just an adjustment and it would take about a year for this to straighten out. It has now.

What the OB/GYN would normally do for too frequent periods is put you on the pill. When I had my daughter, they weren't sure that birth control was copacetic with breast feeding so we did the withdrawal method for a year, which I hated because my periods were heavy and lasted at least 7 days, horrible cramps, ew.

By the time I had my second child there had been enough studies that my OB/GYN put me back on the pill. Breastfeeding went fine and I didn't suffer, and I didn't leave myself vulnerable to another little bundle of joy.

If you are one of those folks that cannot tolerate the pill you are just going to have to suffer through it but one thing you might try is staying off your feet more if you are running around with the little ones. I know I bled worse after the deliveries because I was doing too much, I would think that could possibly affect your cycle as well.

Please look at responses to Elizabeth M, who had the exact same question just a couple postings back.

In short, get your thyroid checked. I had frequent periods for nearly two decades before I was diagnosed as hypothyroid. And, childbirth often triggers (or makes worse) the thyroid problems.
