Frequent Low Grade Fevers with No Other Symptoms

I have a typical healthy 2 1/2yo girl who is very happy but frequently gets these low grade fevers. She doesn't seem to really act any different, eat/drink any different, or say anything hurts, etc. Has anyone had a child or know of anyone who has ever experienced this? I have bad anxiety when it comes to my kids being sick, mostly when it's "my tummy hurts" or they have a fever. Mostly "the unknown". So when she gets these fevers for a few days where her temps goes anywhere from 100.2 to 102 with no explanation and no visible signs of infection (yes, the docs can't see anything wrong either) I am lost.... I of course try to keep her extra hydrated in case it gets worse, I keep her clothing a little loser than normal and pretty much take on the protocol for a typical fever.
Anyway, if anyone can help ease my fears by telling me this is just some weird thing that a lot of kids go through I can get some sleep at night. I would be ever so thankful.... ;) Thanks in advance for reading, K.

So What Happened?

One more thing to add, even though keeping her hydrated.... Looking back on her sick logs she's had this Dec, Jan and now again twice in March and each time she gets the dry heaves one of the mornings she wakes up. She looks really pale, dry heaves a few times. I am able to get small amounts of fluids in her, the color comes back and she is back to just a fever.
In response to your responses: Each time the doc cannot find anything wrong with her. The first few times it happened we thought Roseola because she was famous for that when she was younger - nothing came of it. 2yr molars are in, all other teeth are in.. Ears, throat (strep test included), nose, lymph-nodes, gums look good, private parts look healthy, no pain anywhere when being pushed on, vitals sound great, temp is only taken when she clearly feels unusually warm.... I feel so helpless. Thanks again ladies for at least putting those ideas out there. Maybe they can help someone else in my shoes.

Get her checked for a bladder infection! My kids have battled (both girls) with bladder infections on and off. My youngest had one that was so severe, even though I caught it early enough and had medication (it was the wrong kind for her and didn't work) it put her in the hospital with kidney infection. I'm not saying your daughter is that sick, but the pediatrician told me that the particular strain my daughter had, which had started internally not from a yucky diaper or anything didn't cause any pain until it was too late. I had chalked up the fevers for the first few days to teething, but when I couldn't get them to go away I took her in.

It never hurts to get them checked, fevers are a sign that there is something not right inside her body. She's too old for teething so I'd get her checked. The other thing is check her gums, if she has a hidden gum problem that might be it too. Remember some kids have crazy pain tolerence and won't say when things hurt.

Whatever you do, trust your gut, you're worried, then it's your job to soothe those worries with investigation!

Good luck and let us know what happens!

I currently run a preschool/childcare program in my home & I have 2 little ones who have come down with the low grade fevers over the past 3 months - not at the same time & 2 friends whos kids in the community with same symptom - but no others & they have all tested positive for Mono... which they are saying is diagnosed with a finger prick blood test... Might want to look into seeing if that is the culprit. (Lots of fluids & sleep.) Good luck - J.

I echo the PFAPA response. Keep track of her illnesses. My daughter does tend to run much higher fevers than that with it, though. It could be a possibility, and even if it isn't, the records you keep will be helpful in diagnosing anything that may be wrong.

Don't worry too much! If it is PFAPA, it's very annoying and worrysome, but not life-threatening. And it could be your little one is just in that phase where she's catching everything that goes around and she'll have one awesome immune system!

Is she getting her 2-year molars? That can cause on-and-off fevering.

The only thing I can think is maybe her body is fighting some kind of infection? Can you doctor recommend a specialist? I wish I had more to offer. My oldest always runs a little warm, however after reading your additional comments below, with the dry heaving and being pale, I would not think it is the same thing. The only thing I can think of is that she is fighting something?? I would take her to the doctor the next time it happens and if she/he does not have anything to offer ask for a referral. Good luck!

I agree that frequent fevers are not normal, I have never dealt with this. How often are you checking her temperature to notice? Does she feel warm to the touch and then you go check her temperature? A fever is usually a sign of infection, but in your daughter's case it sounds benign. Sometime allergies can cause your body temperature to go up, but again you said she doesn't have any symptoms. I don't have any advice other than to watch her closely when she gets a fever and keep mentioning it to her doctor or get a second opinion.

She could be teething. Contrary to what many Doctors tell you - kids can and do get a bit of a fever when they are getting teeth. My daughter would get a low-grade fever when she was cutting teeth, but would have NO other symptoms. She wouldn't even say anything in her mouth hurt.. a few days after her fever we'd see new teeth!

I'm sure she's fine. Relax! If she was acting different or not eating/drinking then I'd worry. But since you say she's fine and doesn't have anything else going on, I wouldn't worry about it.

My girls did this off and on for monthes. One would do it for a few days, be rid of it then the 2nd one would start. Finally the Dr did a strep test and they came up positive, gave them antibiotics and haven't had the issue since. I would definitely have her checked completely for what is causing them.

A friend's son (almost three) had frequent fevers that came and went quickly and it turns out he had an ear infection that was quite bad - but he showed none of the usual symptoms of an ear infection. What is strange is that she had taken him to the docs earlier, and they never saw the ear infection. Good luck.

All three of my kids get fevers (anywhere from 100 to 102) every time they have a growth spurt. I didn't make the connection until my middle boy was around 1 1/2. Drove me crazy! Needless to say, even my 9 year old gets feverish when he is in a growth spurt. I wouldn't worry.

Enjoy!

P.S. Just a side note. Be careful about obsessing over illness, you could accidentally turn your baby into a hypochondriac. You wouldn't want that. Just enjoy them! They are gonna get sick sometimes and we have great docs in the world to help us out.

My son had high recurrent fevers (103-104.5) every 3-4 weeks since he was 6 months old...then at 2, he was finally diagnosed with PFAPA (just means he had high fevers and yucky tonsils that was not strep every 3-6 weeks). The only reason we caught this was because I kept a illness diary from the time her was about a year- oh and he never showed any other symptoms...never complained that his throat hurt or anything. Not to say your son has that, but use your gut and if you are concerned, keep a diary and then show it to your doctor.

BUT I have been talking to lots of moms lately and it does seem like many of their kids run lower fevers- like you are saying- without any symptoms that only last for a day or two- so it may be normal or it may just be a small virus...but again, use your gut if you think something is wrong.
