Frequent and VERY Loose Bm's

My one year old son has been having diarrhea for 8 days, about 6-7 times a day. I am talking about complete blow-outs - up the back, out the legs of the diaper...a lot like a breastfed newborn. I took him to the Dr. yesterday and they basically just gave me ideas on how to treat the diaper rash and also suggested cutting fruits out of his diet and giving him a pro-biotic. I have been doing this for 24 hours now but there does not seem to be any change, at least yet. Then today, my older son (3 years) started having diarrhea and had it at least 4 times this afternoon. He told me that his tummy hurt a little but that he is fine (he often says he is fine no matter how sick he is because he does not want to miss any activities). Other than the diarrhea, both boys seem perfectly fine...no change in appetite and acting normal. My one year old is teething (last one year molar) but he has never had diarrhea with any of his other teeth (he currently has 11). The Dr. also said that diarrhea with teething usually lasts between 3-4 days. I should also note that neither of my boys drink milk or juice (only water) so it is not from too much juice or a lactose intollerance. Anyway, I guess my question is...has anyone ever had any experience with this and does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do for my boys? Thanks in advance for any help!

What can I do next?

I wonder if they could have an intestinal parasite like crytospridium or giardia. I just read a news article recently about several public pools in Phoenix closing because of cryptosporidium contamination that was causing people to become ill. http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/20...

Here is some more info I found:
"Cryptosporidium is associated with water-borne outbreaks. The victim might experience diarrhea and abdominal pain lasting for about ten days.

Giardia is the most prevalent intestinal parasite in humans and found in drinking water. Symptoms are mild to moderate abdominal cramps, intestinal gas, light colored stools, bad absorption, weakness, chills, stomach bloating and diarrhea."

Maybe you could get a stool sample tested at the pediatrician to rule it out. It's a little disappointing that their doctor kind of blew it off like that. I know how that can be. Best of luck...I hope they get well soon. :)

The best thing for healing the intestinal tract is called Sangre de Drago. It is a sap from a tree in the Amazon rain forest and has been studied for it ability to stop bleeding. It literally repairs tissue and works internally as well as topically. I would recommend giving them a few drops in water several times a day. Another powerful herb from the rainforest is called Una de Gato. It has been shown to be anti-viral and anti-bacterial as well as to fight dysentery and colitis. You can get both of these as single, whole herb tinctures and concentrates, or as part of other formulas. One that would be extremely helpful (and contains both the herbs mentioned) is called Fiberzon. It combines several herbs with psyllium fiber so that it really cleans out the intestines in a healing way by absorbing and eliminating toxins. With both your boys showing the same symptoms it could be a food-borne toxin or even a parasite. Either way the best thing you can do for them comes from the rain forest. If you want more information about these herbs or how you can get them, feel free to contact me.

It doesn't sound normal at all. I would take him to a pediatric gastroenterologist. Google one for your area. In the meantime, make sure he gets electrolytes to replace those that he's losing, and so he doesn't risk dehydration and get worse.

Best,

Hi A.,
I agree with the previous writer that it could be a spore or bacterium your boys are sharing. The MD would have to get their stools tested to find out. You shouldn't have to make another appt, just call the MD's nurse and ask if you can get a stool test kit, or if they need to get it in the office.

In the meantime, it would help if you tried doing super-clean mode, or everyone in the family will just keep swapping it around.

I am NOT suggesting you are not clean in your home. But spore-borne bugs and bacterium spread by hanging out on surfaces (infected kid touches surface, Mom touches surface, spreads to next kid). Even very clean homes can get covered in microscopic bugs very quickly. Start by washing everyone's (even your's) linens, towels, even shower-curtains. Wash down all hard surfaces in bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen (plain soap and water is enough). Keep hand-sanitizer and hand soap available everywhere, and scrub hands after every diaper-change (their's and your's) or toileting. Clean everything, including doorknobs, light switches, shower and sink faucets, toilet seats, toys, walls, dresser-drawer pulls, the refrigerator handle: go crazy. Even keep a soapy cloth handy to quickly wipe down an area after you or the kids use it.

If the test finds something, you'll likely have to keep up the clean-mode until everyone has stopped showing symptoms. If the tests are negative, then you'll need to look somewhere else (?)

I hope this is helpful: when we're already doing everything we can for our kids, then have to kick into high gear for an illness, it can be very stressful. Good luck, and hope your little ones get better soon!

Hi A. -

If you are willing to try herbal tea - make an infusion of sage leaf and spearmint. Let the boys drink 1/4 to 1/2 cup 3 or 4 times a day. This should help within 24 hours. You can sweeten with agave or honey if necessary.

I just saw something on the news recently about a bacteria that is chlorine-resistant. Have your kids been swimming recently? The symptoms sound just like this. I can't remember all the details but you could find it if you googled chlorine resistant + pool + illness. I hope you find some answers regardless!

Hi A.!
This sounds a lot like what my boys just had recently. They both got the Rotovirus. It was yucky. The diarrhea lasted about 10 days and it was just like water. My youngest had a fever, but my oldest didn't. The doctor said there was nothing we could do about it. It just had to run its course. :( The doctor also told me to keep them on the BRAT diet- bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. Anything white and bland. Plain potatoes, plain pastas, etc. I gave them pedialyte and eventually it did get better. Good luck!

I wanted to add that Giardia is also a parasite found in dogs and can be transfered to humans, and vise versa. If you have a pet maybe have them checked as well.

A. - Since all your boys drink are water, I would question it. What is your water source - is it city? Are you on a well? If so is the well water fed from a natural source or is the water trucked in to a cistern/holding tank? Also, how is the pipe system in your house? My daughter got intestinal parasites when she was 3 from tainted water. It took us 2 months before we could figure out was wrong. No one else had problems from the water because our systems were older, more developed, we could handle it.

You can either have your water checked or your children checked; in the meantime - either switch to bottled water or get a purifier pitcher.

Good luck and let us know when you find something out!

Blessings - J.
