I love taking freezer meals to new moms to help them get through those tough days. I'm looking for recipes that are also breastfeeding friendly so they won't upset the baby's tummy. Any suggestions?

What a great idea and a nice thing to do. Since it is different for every baby what they are sensitive to, you can never tell. Both of my pediatricians, my midwife and my ob all said that a breastfeeding mom can eat whatever she normally does -- unless the baby starts showing signs of sensitivity or allergy. I ate everything I normally ate with both my kids and they were fine.

I wouldn't change the recipes for nursing mothers unless they have something that they need to stay away from. Stews, lasagna, soups, chicken pot pies, enchilada's all freeze well. I'm actually planning on making up some meals for a friend that is expecting soon too. I also did this when I was expecting, but didn't do near enough, or enough variety. Have fun!

I think it's great that you are supporting new mommies! Congrats on your own little one :) I'm still breastfeeding and my baby is now 7 mos. With her, I found that she seemed to have spit up if I ate mexican meals. They didn't even need to be that spicy. So I had to stay away from tomato based meals with onions and peppers. I could do one of those three ingredients in a meal, but not all three in the same meal. If that makes sense. Tuna Noodle Casserole is a good freezer meal that doesn't have all of that stuff in it.

I also found that having snacks available was good. I was hungry ALL OF THE TIME! So I made healthy muffins in large batches and then would freeze some so I could have them when I needed them. I like to make apple bran muffins. The bran cereals have good recipes on their websites.

Keep it up :)

I have never changed my diet when nursing my children, so I would think any type meal will work. Lasagna and casseroles work GREAT! Doing this is very thoughtful of you!

Make it a GREAT day!

Honestly, I think that pretty much anything acceptable to mom is safe for baby, as far as foods. Some things should be in moderation, but I ate broccoli, spicy foods, cabbage, chinese, etc while I was nursing. The only thing I would avoid, and more in preganacy, is raw meat or fish -I had to pass on ths sushi :( But now my kids have a palate for all sorts of interesting foods, too.

I am an owner of Dream Dinners in Wheat Ridge, and their recipes work very well for new mothers! We have customers do this all the time for themselves or their friends. I think there is a misconception that it's expensive, but it's actually cheaper than the grocery store because we are able to buy things in bulk. And you can cater the recipes to your tastes (or special dietary needs). The menu changes every month. Feel free to give us a call ###-###-#### or visit the website at www.dreamdinners.com

Hello there.
I made beef stroganoff - but I changed it to chicken stroganoff. It's comfort food, freezes well, and always tastes good.
Also I made several veggie purees that froze really well. My favorite was broccoli with potato.

Try the cookbook Frozen Assets cookbook series (I prefer the Lite and Healthy one). There are a lot of great recipes in it perfect for freezing.

Look for these cookbooks at the library or bookstore: "Fix, Freeze, Feast" and "Don't Panic, Dinner's in the Freezer" - all of the recipes are great and Fix, Freeze Feast is styled like Dream Dinners where there isn't any cooking ahead of time for most recipes - you just assemble and then freeze and then cook when needed - most just involved baking or grilling so very easy cooking! We really like the flank steak recipes and the chicken enchilada one. Also, they have directions for making the meals in bulk so you will be able to assemble several meals from one recipe - so you can make one for yourself and one for a friend!

Ahhh-my friends are doing this for me and my family right now. Such a special gift :) So far the best meals that we've frozen have been veggie lasagne, a light stew, and an eggless quiche. A few have been eaten the night they're dropped off, so not sure how they freeze. I'd keep the ingredients mild and down play the dairy element, just in case.

how nice of you! bet she'll love anything you bring :)
