I need to buy a baby gate to go around a large bird cage and am hoping for some advice. Ideally we would like one that is free standing but am wondering if people have found any that truly work well. Thanks so much!

I believe we're all talking about the same thing. Mine was called a superyard. I found one on craigslist.

We use the hexagon plastic gate. You can take out pieces to make it smaller too. ITs about $50 at Babies R Us or you can try Walmart too. It also folds up when not in use.

Great grandparents had a hexagon-shaped playyard (free-standing gate). Can't remember the brand, but it's heavy duty plastic and you can surround something with it. At first, we put the children inside it to keep them safe then we decided they were more accepting of the situation if we put it around the danger zone, in this case a wood burning stove in the middle of the living room. It worked well but I would not rely on any gate product to work unsupervised -- children might be able to move it or go under it. However, it does reinforce the "no" in this case and after a while, my children learned not to touch gates.

We used a hexagonal play yard. If you can't find it in the baby aisle, try the pet aisle or online. The only issue I have w/the gate is that it gets very dirty as our bird (like most parrots, I believe) is prone to soaking his food and then bathing in the water dish. I used to wipe down the top of the gate weekly and then periodically take the gate outside and hose it down to clean it.

I think Babies R Us and Target both sell a free-standing gate for outside (a big circle) that maybe would work for you.

I have one that I am trying to sell, let me know if you're interested. It's from one step ahead. I didn't use it much because my son didn't like to be in there. I have the 2 extensions too.

Hi C.,
I have the same free-standing hexagon gate that everyone else has mentioned. It's a good gate, BUT:
- it is very easy for little ones to push across wood, vinyl, tile floors
- the holes/webbing of the gate are the perfect size for little fingers and toes to use to climb up and over it

Since your son is only 3 months old neither of these things should be a problem for quite a while, but just know that it may just be a temporary solution until he starts crawling/walking.
