Free of Mercury

one of my girls had a case of pneumonia last year. i have decided against anything that contains mercury but i need to have her at least get the flu shot cause she's considered higher risk.
i went to ped's office today and talked to the lady at the front desk and asked her if it is possible for the pediatrician to order a mercury free vaccine for my girls and that i will cover all the expenses for it. she said she will talk to two doctors in staff (not the one w see always) because they're in charge of that.
she called a few hours later and said:
'the doctors will not order mercury-free vaccines.'
case closed.
i am not becoming offensive or defensive in this case, but i am wondering if they (doctors) can they do that? as in refuse considering they would not bear any financial expenses in this case? i guess they just did, but what would be the reason behind it? is it time to switch doctors?
we will not give the girls flu shots unless they are mercury free.
EDIT: I didn't know as parents we have the right to say no to vaccines. I only assumed they were mandatory. I have been reading up a lot on this topic, comparing it to how it is done in other countries, and have decided to at least make a stop to this pandemic situation of autism on the rise (actually skyrocketting) for my family. I will not allow any toxins in my kids' body any longer
thank you!

If I were you, I'd look for a pediatrician who would honor your wishes. Most peds stock mercury free vaccines now, and it's just individual doses. Not a big deal. Also, Fairfax County Health Dept offers mercury free flu shots for a small fee. My son and I got them last fall.

I would say it's time to switch Doctors! My Doctors office dosn't even carry the shots with mercury in them any more just to ease the fear of Parents for their Children. It's not necessary to take the risk if the shot is available without it.And you should NOT have to pay extra for her safety. If they are not willing work with you than you need to find someone that will.

Hi:

If you decide you must get your children a flu shot and your doctor's office does not stock the thimerosal free version you can have him/her order one through www.hopewellrx.com (where components of MMR can be ordered separately as well). If your doctor refuses to do something so simple perhaps you need to find a new doctor!! BTW, the thimerosal-free (mercury free) vaccines cost a little bit more b/c they come in single dose vials so your doctor is making a monetary decision when s/he refuses to grant your wishes.

Vaccines are not at all mandatory in the US. Schools often require them for entrance but every state provides for medical exemption and most states provide for religious or philosophical exemption. In the state of Virginia you simply need to download an exemption form from the state health website sign it in front of a notary, and submit it to the schools along with your other paperwork and you are exempt.

I would find another Doctor. However to answer your question about them refusing to order the vaccine- yes they can. I found this out in reading articles about Gardisil. Doctors pay for all vaccines etc up front, the insurance companies tell them how much they will reimburse ( which is not always the full amount and the Drs eat the difference or charge the patient). A lot of Drs won't take the risk of ordering something for a patient and them not paying for it. It may cost a lot more than you realize. They should have explained this to you, and b/c they didn't I would switch.

I agree that this might spark a look for another doctor. I think the kind thing to do would have been to have the doctor call you back and explain why they're not willing to do this and engage you in a conversation, instead of just summarily saying no.

It never occurred to me to ask for a mercury-free vaccine, but now that you've put the idea out there, I'm definltely going to ask my pediatrician about it. Are you concerned about autism, or just side-effects from Mercury?
