Free Haircut for a Locks of Love Donation

Hi, I am looking for a salon that would offer a free haircut with a Locks of Love or Pantene Beautiful Lengths donation. I have about 12 inches of hair to donate. My family recently moved here from Seattle, where pretty much ALL of the salons would do a free cut if you donated your hair. Unfortunately, I have called around a few of the nicer salons in the Schaumburg area and NONE of them offer this service! Honestly feel that is pretty selfish! I am willing to travel a bit, Just want to ensure I get a quality cut. Anyone aware of a nice salon who would offer a free cut? Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks to all who sent notes of encouragement!! I think it is wonderful that salon chains such as Great Clips and Cost Cutters offer this service to those who donate. Unfortunately, those are the places my son & husband often get thier hair cut and 9 times out of 10 we have to fix it when they get home. Since I am a Woman (who is pregnant!) it is important that I get a good cut so I look cute : ) I highly encourage anyone with the patience to grow thier hair for a few years in order to get enough length to donate to do so. Locks for Love and Pantene Beautiful Lengths are BOTH WONDERFUL charities that give hair pieces to those who are usually going through the greatest challenge of thier lives. Please don't listen to anyone having negative comments about them!! I think for the $160+ it would cost for a cut and color from a nicer salon...I'll just use money that towards a ticket back to Seattle where those in the hair industry are PROUD to donate thier services towards charitable causes...it's a win-win situation!
P.S. I never stated that I would NOT donate my hair if I did not get a free cut...I am not that petty!

Two years ago my daughter donated to locks of love and got her haircut for free at Hair Team 53 in Addison at Lake St. and Rohlwing Rd. I don't rememeber the name of the girl who did it but she did a great job.

Please do NOT go to Great Clips to donate your hair... I went there about 2 years ago for this purpose, and I was so sad to have chopped my hair for such a crappy cut. I am afraid that the stylist didn't ponytail my hair correctly and there wasn't enough to donate anyway! Bad bad experience!!!

I also donated my hair at another place in Buffalo Grove about 5 years ago. It was GREAT! Best haircut I ever had (until I found my current stylist). The name is Nu Age Hair. It was at the corner of Dundee Road and Buffalo Grove Road. I don't know their current policy about Locks of Love... it's worth checking! 847/541-2466

Check on the Locks of Love website. But make sure that you do not go to a great clips. I have NEVER received a nice hair cut from there. IMO, any salon would be better.

Call Chic Concepts in Roselle. It's a small business owned by a nice girl - named Rebecca. All stylists there would do a great job (Bethany is my sister, so of course I love her cuts, but Rebecca, Val, or any of them). I don't know what their policy is, but Rebecca is so nice, I'm sure she'd be willing to talk to you. ###-###-####

My 8 year old just did the hair donation this summer. We went to cost cutters. Although each is individually owned and there is a high turnover, you never know what you're gonna get. Since my daughter only had 8-10" to donate, we decided to donate to Pantene. Their website has great direction on what to do and how to do it. CC basically tied the hair off and cut off 4 bundles all together. It was our responsibility to send the hair in to Pantene. They wrote my daughter a nice letter thanking her. The girl at CC gave her a nice haircut, and I got a nice haircut and highlights but I went back to the same store 6 months later and there were different people and I wasn't thrilled. Good luck, you're doing a great thing! L.

I am pretty sure that most Great Clips will give you a free haircut if you are donating to Locks of Love. Its not an "upscale" salon, but that is one place to try.

Great job and its a wonderful thing that you are doing.

Hi C.,
I have gone to the same place for the 3 Locks of Love donations that I personally have done. I always go to a Buffalo Grove salon called Hair Directors. Make an appointment with Andrea, she does a terrific job - for free!!! Please tell her that J. sent you. The number is ###-###-####. They are at;
1375 W Dundee Rd, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089
Good luck and thank you for donating!

I am sure that this is going to sound mean and that I will get comments. But I find it a bit hypocritical that you find it selfish that someone won't cut your hair for free for your hair donation, but that you won't donate your hair if you have to pay for the haircut. Stylists cut hair for a living, not as a charity.

Also, I believe that I heard that a lot of salons no longer participate because Locks of Love's financial statements do not support that they are actually doing much. What I heard is that the BBB no longer categorizes them as a charitable organization due to their financials. Supposedly they sell a lot of the hair that is donated to commercial wig makers rather than making wigs for kids. I am sure if you google it, you will find more about it.

That being said, Sapphire Shears in Bartlett, IL (it is a home salon) will do a free haircut if you donate the minimum of 10 inches of hair. I believe that he also travels to clients homes for haircuts as well.

Good Luck,
D.
