T.K.
try freecycle.
My plan is to split a cord 4 ways with some co-workers. It's way cheaper than paying grocery store price for a small bundle.
Anyone know where I might find free firewood nearby for an indoor fireplace? I looked on craigslist but most people say to bring your own chainsaw, which we don't have. Thanks for any ideas!
I would have rented and done it myself, but being pregnant with twins, it's not an option :) And my husband works long hours and most weekends, so he doesn't have the time or energy at this point. BUT, I kept asking and found all we could haul, already chopped. Yay!

I think you'll be pretty hard-pressed to find free firewood without bringing your own chainsaw. Do you know anyone you could borrow a chainsaw from? You also might consider finding a splitter/axe in case some of the wood is excessively thick.
Hmm, I wonder if you could rent a chainsaw or borrow one?
I wonder if in Bastrop there is usable fire wood? They are cutting down 10,000 of trees over there. And also lots of the homes are being totally taken apart.
It is a lot of hard work to cut down a tree and the firewood. My husband has done this a number of times to get us lots of free wood, but people don't have the time to cut up the wood for you for free as well. Please buy a chain saw and do it yourself. It's great exercise too if you you a splitter and ax to break down the big logs so they burn well.
Call the garden services, sometimes they have firewood, and mulch that they would gladly give away.
Yeah--that's usually the ads--tree down and "free" firewood for you means "free" tree removal for them!
You can rent a chainsaw pretty easily though. So then it would be "almost free"!
I'd suggest joining a Freecycle group. I've often seen offers for free firewood on my group. You can also post to the group with your request. Freecycle is awesome and a great way to reuse rather than contribute to the landfills. Googling Freecycle should get you to the right place. Good luck.

In a couple state parks here they stack chopped wood by the side of the road for people to take - however, you really never know when they are going to do it. I've seen people stop and load up their car trunks. Might be worth calling into any state parks in your area and see if they have a similar program.
I second the idea of buying, renting, or borrowing a chainsaw (you can even ask the person giving the free firewood if you can use theirs). We are in the process of cutting down 2 huge trees. We are giving almost all of the wood away for free (to people we know), but I'm not going to split, bundle, and deliver it for them, too! :)
