I need some info. Back in the sixties, in Contra Costa County CA, did they put fraternal twins on the same birth certificate? I'm the only one out of 8 kids who doesn't have a birth certificate, but I do believe that my brother John and I are fraternal twins, which explains allot. Any info would be appreciated. My mom took this secret to the grave. My brother, was born on May 21,1961 in Martinez CA

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My mom used a certificate of birth for school, it only states the birthdate. I got my social security card in high school with this.

Hi, C.,

I have seen two births recorded on one birth certificate but that was in NYC in the 1910's. I can't imagine that it was legal in California to NOT issue a birth certificate. All states collect vital record statistics [birth, death, marriage, etc.] Surely, you went to school where proof of birthdate is required.

I would try your elementary school [or school district] for your cumulative file. A photocopy of your birth [birth certificate, baptismal certificate, or passport] should be included or since it was 1961 there might not be a copy but there should be a notation about what was provided when you were registered. It is a starting point for further research.

What did you use to obtain your learner's permit at the DMV or your marriage license or a passport?

In Sacto, there are books with the indices of births and deaths reported to the state - you might try there as well. Perhaps the record before or after your brother will be you. BTW, what is your supposed birthdate? How close in age are you to your 'twin' brother?

Good luck. I will be interested to see what other moms suggest.

You would contact the county office that records births. You can request a copy of your birth certificate. I think it is pretty common to lose a birth certificate. They could also tell you if there was only one birth certificate per pregnancy. I think it's unlikely.

If you were born in Contra Costa County go to the department of records in Martinez downtown, They have all records of births and you can get a copy of your birth certificate the same day. I have done this for my kids. It is easy, costs are minimal, but I don't remember exact amount paid.
