Four Month Old Throwing up Solids All of a Sudden

Greetings moms. I started my four month old son on solids about three weeks ago. We started with a little single grain oatmeal cereal for a few days, then introduced a veggie and then another. We were doing a new food about every 3 days. He did well the first two weeks. Last Thursday, we tried pears. He ate quite a bit and had cereal and the rest of his bottle. That evening, about 3 hours later he was sleeping and threw everything up. Figuring it was the pears or maybe a stomach bug, we did breast milk only for several days. Last night I gave it a whirl again but went back to peas - which he's had three times already without incident. I gave him only a small amount thinking maybe last time he overate since he didn't exhibit any other symptoms of a stomach bug and it was an isolated incident. Same deal. Few hours later, he threw up the cereal, peas and bmilk. Anyone experience this before? Eating okay and then suddenly throwing up everything? My poor little guy is doing this in his sleep and as I mentioned, it's several hours after he's finished eating. We're burping him so it's not a bubble, he's not being bounced around during playtime after dinner or anything of the sort. As far as milk, he's only on breastmilk which he does fine with. Thoughts? Experiences?

Also, our pediatrion gives the green light for starting solids at 4 months.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I talked to the doc today and asked if it were possible that his system wasn't ready and he said no, it's more likely that he doesn't like what I'm feeding him. That response didn't make sense to me. He's vomiting 2 and 3 hours after feedings and isn't rejecting what I'm feeding him. He slurped down pears and seemed to LOVE them.

We did solids at 4 months with my first and had no problems. I have to remember that these are completely different babies and that it's entirely possible that he's just not ready. That and everyone else I've spoken with said their docs wait until 6 months. We'll start up again in a couple months. Thanks!

Nowadays, some peds recommend starting solids around 6m, and later if there is a family history of food allergies.

I recommend reading Dr Sears "The Baby Book" or visiting the website http://www.askdrsears.com/ for additional info.

Also, if you are second-guessing your ped's recommendations, it may be wise to go with your own gut instinct and seek another opinion or possibly find a new ped.

Maybe you should wait until he is a little older. His stomach may not be able to handle it. Just because the ped gave the green light, does not mean you have to start.

Just because the ped said to start doesn't mean you should. You're the mom. Wait a few more months atleast and give him time to develop a stronger gut. He's just not ready for food yet. Keep on the breastfeeding and he'll do just fine.

It is really recommended not to start solid foods until at least 6 months of age. Their little guts are just not mature enough and it increases risks of allergies.

I would consider going back to just breastmilk. It really is all he needs right now

Hi J.,
I'm sorry you are going through this right now. My son was throwing up a lot from a stomach bug when he was 11 month, and I know it really hurts to watch them, especially at such a young age of 4 month! :(

I would suggest to hold off on all solids until 6 months, except for cereal. It is highly recommended by most pediatricians to wait until 6 months to even start cereal, but I know a lot of moms start at 4 months, and if there is no history of allergies in your family, I think that's ok. But in all honesty, even if your doctor said its ok to start, what is the hurry? Your little guy will get to sample all kinds of foods soon, don't push it, especially with the way he is reacting to it.

My biggest advise to you though is to call your doctor if you haven't already, and describe what is happening. It doesn't really sound like allergies, but it could be. It could also be that his stomach is just not mature enough to handle all the variety at this point. Just ask your doctor and see what they say.

Best of luck.
