Four Month Old Suddenly Fussy

My son has always has such a sweet disposition. He's always eaten well and slept well after 2 1/2 months. Suddenly, he's become very fussy and irritable. Nothing we do will console him. He cried himself to sleep in my arms last night...a first for that. He usually has no problems going to sleep at night. He drools like crazy and tries to eat his fist. My husband and I think he's teething...but we hope nothing else is going on. He was diagnosed with reflux around 2 months, and has been taking meds for it. He's run a low grade fever but nothing that doesn't go away over night and it's only happened 3 times. His cheeks are so rosy. I think he might be getting over tired as well as he doesn't like to nap much during the day. Any suggestions? Also, he only falls asleep during a feeding...I haven't been able to teach him self soothe...he screams and gets upset if I lay him down sleepy but not asleep yet. It's very frustrating for me because we haven't had any problems until now, and we haven't changed anything.

What can I do next?

I also have a 4 month old and he has been teething for about a month now. He drools and always has his fist in his mouth, but is not generally that fussy. We got him a holistic teething product, called Camillia I believe. It seems to work so far. Also, with self soothing, try seeing if he will take his thumb. My son just found his thumb and it's awesome because he can put himself right back to sleep (if he's not hungry).
One last question, has your baby recently been vaccinated? I have had several friends whose babies had weird reactions to them and, therefore, had very fussy babies. Could be a thought to consider.
Hope it gets better!

Maybe he gained weight and his reflux medication needs to be adjusted. None of my children were fussy to that degree when teething, but I suppose it could be that too. At any rate, I'd make an appt. to see his pedi.

Hope he feels better soon :)

My first guess is he could be teething - talk with your pediatrician first before trying anything though (beyond giving him something to cold to gum on). My DD didn't start teething until she was around 6 to 7 months old and when it got really bad, infant Tylenol or Motrin worked wonders.

I was thinking teething until you mention rosy cheeks, perhaps some allergy?
My daughter had eczema, that was also affected for allergies to odd things, like the heathers in our pillows and her cheeks were red.
It doesn't hurt to take him to your pediatric just to play safe.

Sounds like teething to me. Both of my kids started at around 3 months. The kids oral gel stuff never worked for them. But those freezable teething toys did. The other thing that worked was rum. Just dip your finger in a little and rub it on the gums. That worked the best. When your feeling his gums you might not feel any teeth yet but the are growing just the same. Also, a tooth might pop out and then recede back in several times before it shows itself for good. It's normal.

Ah, welcome to parenting.

There's something you will learn this first year and that is that growing is frustrating for kids and parents. Parents because we can just go happily alon gin our routine and then WHAM they are fussy and angsty and mad as hell for DAYS and then, a tooth pops through, or suddenly OMG Lil Susie can CRAWL.

Its rough on kids because it's uncomfortable and annoying to not be able to communicate/get/do what you want.

Sounds to me like teething with all the drool and fist chewing. Get him a Sophie, and hang in there.
