Hello Mammas,
Well, let me start by saying "we never get away." Anyway, this summer not sure which month yet, we are going to take a four day vacation with our girls who are 2 and 5. Seeing that I don't get away often, I am looking for a place that is close maybe less than 6 hours (we will be driving) with a lot to do for the two girls. Now my husband and I won't lay on a beach all day, but would like to take them to a beach for a few hours. However, that is not a prerequisite. So, looking for ideas on:
1. A fun place not too far from Chicago
2. Excellent for two young girls
3. Maybe a place that has a fun summer fest or fair

Looking for a variety of suggestions for different types of places. Thanks in advance!

How about Wisconsin Dells? It's not exactly the beach but there were tons of places to play in the water. We found good places to eat, reasonable lodging and the whole place has a vacation atmosphere.

I was thinking Wisconsin Dells too! My sister used to love going there, but they mostly went in the winter.

I've always wanted to go to Mackinac (sp?) Island in Michigan.

Good luck - hope you have a great time.

I agree with the Dells. There is so much to do. I’ve stayed at quite a few places there and loved Chula Vista. You can’t go wrong with the Dells.

When my kids were that age they loved the Duck ride there. Hey, I'm 38 and I love the duck ride.

I'd check out Southwestern Michigan, especially the coastal areas of Lake Michigan. They have resorts and camping sites there, so you can really do whatever you'd like there.

We rarely get away either. The only trip we take each year is a four day trip to Wisconsin Dells and stay at Glacier Canyon Lodge. I have three girls 9,6 and 3. We have been going since my oldest was 2 and they look forward to it every year. My kids aren't great on car rides either so the distance is perfect (about 3 hours). We call it kiddie Las Vegas. Good luck!

I'm in California so I don't have any specific advice on location but Tripadvisor.com is very helpful when planning a trip. You can check out the place the poster below is talking about, it foes look fun. They have information on hotels, restaurants and activities for anywhere in the world.

Happy Travels!

Michigan's Adventure in White Hall. Stay in White Hall or Pentwater. Go to the beach. Visit Saugatuck--Wednesday night is live music at the gazebo. Most of the towns have a festival once in the summer--find out which weekend you go and hit the right town. Grand Haven seems to have the biggest one--The Coast Guard festival, which is in July.
