Formula... Yuk!!!

hi... I had the same problem w/my second. try pumping and mixing breast milk with formula... at first 1 oz of formula only ... gradually increase an ounce per day or two depending on reaction... good luck!!!

I had the same issue with my daughter when she was weaning. I weaned her by pumping breast milk and fed her only that from the bottle at first. Then I gradually started adding in formula, adding a little more each time until it was eventually all formula, not breast milk. I spread it out over a two, two and a half week period of time. If you are no longer producing milk, try flavoring his formula with a sprinkle or two of pumpkin pie spice...it sounds crazy, but it worked for me & my sister just had her first baby a year ago..it worked for her as well. Its all natural & it disguises the taste of the formula. Good luck!

I feel for you! Try mixing in some Karo syrup with the formula...it gives it a little sweeter taste and it doesn't hurt him. I had to do this with all 3 of mine b/c they were on soy and it would constipate them. Another thing is talk to your pediatrician about switching to whole milk. I put my two youngest on it at 9 months and my doctor said it was fine. He may recommend a vitamin to supplament. Good Luck.

The easiest way to get babies used to formula is to pump your own milk- which also keeps you out of the way of little teeth- and gradually mix in formula over time until the baby is used to it. Babies turn up formula all the time- in part because human milk is sweet! Be patient- if you have decided to give up breastfeeding, it is important to make sure your baby is getting the hydration, nutrients, and important amount of fat that formula or breastmilk give. I think patience on this one will be most cost effective over the long run!

I would try expressing some breast milk with a pump to get him used to drinking from a bottle and then I would try adding a little formula to the breast milk ( a little at a time ) in order to get him used to the formula. Soy formula is usually recommended, ( sometimes it is less upsetting to the stomach ) but maybe try the formula that he showed the least resistance to and start mixing in a little formula with the breast milk.

Along with mixing formula and breastmilk that other moms have already suggested... I will offer advice that I got from my lactation consultant and pediatrician. There is no "magic wand" that gets waved when a child is 12 months old to switch to whole milk... you can make the transition a bit sooner. (Of course take allergies and other normal development into consideration.) I made the switch at about 10.5 months and did so slowly. So if you can hold on and breastfeed for a bit longer (or even combine breastmilk and formula for a bit longer) then you can start to make the transition to whole milk! Of course, check with the DR, but milk is SO much cheaper than formula! Of course it does involve a bit more planning when you are out and about.

Hello there, I am just starting to slow down on breastfeeding and yesterday I tried to feed Kira Enfamil w/lipil pwd like the dr said and she would not drink it. I tasted to it see what was wrong and it tasted like the breast milk when its bad. She will take the cans that are ready to feed though. I first started to mix it slowly into the breastmilk for a few days 3oz bm then 1 oz formula and now she will take it alone!! Good luck!

My son HATES powered formula but he'll drink the liquid kind. I use Similac Advance in the liquid form. It's $5 - $6 for a 32 oz bottle. If he likes it you can buy them in cases and save more. Hope this helps!

Can you stick it out till he's 12m, so that you can switch him to reg whole milk? He milk like that more. Or, try mixing breast milk with formula 1/2 & 1/2 for a day or so. Or even begin with less, 3/4 BM & 1/4 formula, and gradually increase it. He'll adopt. Or, don't starve him, but make sure he's really really hungry and only offer the formula. He'll figure out that he must drink it and will. It's drastic, but it will work. My friend had to do that to switch to whole milk when her daughter was 12m.

You said he will not take the breastmilk from a bottle have you tried a sippy or reg cup??

My almost 8-month-old hates formula too. Have you tried pumping some of your milk and then making a bottle combining breast and formula? At first you could try a 75%Breast- 25% formula mix and then lower the breast amount with each bottle. That way he can get used it it. This has been working for me and I hope it helps you too. I have used the "Good Start" brand. I mix that up following the directions and then make a bottle with it and my milk. It has been the only way my baby will take it. Since i don't know whan i am going stop breastfeeding, I want her to be used to the fomula and this seems to do the trick. good luck!

Hi G., I'm a mother of three and had my first child at 26 also. I have two suggestions first try to speak to a dietician at the WIC office that will help with the cost of the formula they usually give free sample. The program is for women & children and it helps with alot of information. Second suggestion try Cow Milk (Whole not 2% or Low Fat) your baby still need the fat from the milk until he turns 2yrs old.

Maybe your baby doesn't want to drink from a bottle. Have you tried a sippy cup? You might want to try to pump. And, if you want to stop because he's bitting you, take him off the breast and make sure that he knows that bitting is a big no no. Believe me, he will stop bitting if he wants to breastfeed. If he totally refuses to take formula, hang in there, you're almost at the 1 year mark. I breastfed my son for 15 months.

Have you tried mixing 1/2 formula and 1/2 breast milk? That's what I did with my daughter. It took almost 2 weeks to completely make the transition to fomula.
