Hi Mamas,

I have a two month old that has been on Similac Advance since two weeks after birth. My first one was on Similac Advance as well and never had any problems. Well my little one drinks her formlua all day long and never has any problems until every night around the same time. It varys from maybe 5 to maybe 10. She cries and seems very upset. I don't know what is causing this. If we go outside she quits crying. It only lasts maybe around 20 min to an hour. Then once this is over she sleeps in her own bed and gets up one time during the night to be fed. I called her Dr. and they said it might be her formula. They said if it was colic then nothing would make her quit crying. They told me that Similac Advance is hard on babies tummies. Funny how they never mentioned this with my first one. And they recommended that I change her to Enfamil Lipil for one week and she how she does. She has her two month checkup tomorrow. So my question is what kind of formula do you use and has this happend to anyone else?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

My son who has had tummy problems for a while we were originally on Similac Advanced and occasionally would go to Enfamil, but his tummy didn't like it. But now we are on the lactose free Similac Orange can.

I'm not sure this has anything to do with formula. Many babies just have a kind of "witching hour" where they cry for no reason. My daughter's was between 5 and 7 every night. I would try the 5 s's: http://www.babyslumber.com/happiestbaby.html From the Happiest Baby on the Block.

Switching formula is hard on their tummies, if it wasnt the problem. We also used Similac Advance with no issues.

At the hospital, my son was Enfamil. We had a can so we used it until we got WIC. They gave us Similac. He started having tummy troubles...constipation...crying for no apparent reason, whereas I thought it was colic, too. He wasn't sleeping his usual 3-4 hours between feeds. My husband suggested yesterday I go and get another can of Enfamil just to see if it's the problem...so I gave him a bottle last night at 8pm, and he slept til 12am! It was amazing! But that stuff is so expensive and WIC doesn't provide it, so I don't know what to do. but that's our experience (my son is 5 wks old)

When my baby was on Similac she was really constipated and had a ton of gas. She was fussy from her tummy hurting. Everyone I knew told me to get her off that similac, it's the worst thing for babies (I didn't know). I switched to enfamil and it all went away. I like the LIPIL one the best. The powder is way different. It's lighter it seems and mixes well. I also liked that it wasn't as foamy as teh similac when you mixed it. Thats just my opinion though.

When my daughter was an infant she developed a bad rash from head to toe from Similac. When I changed her to Enfamil it disappeared within hours. If your baby has colic you may want to try Hylands homeopathic colic med/tabs, they instantly melt in the mouth. They help especially if you give it at the right timming before it gets really bad. There are quite a few colic meds to choose from. Also, when babies have colic they do better when wrapped firmly and held close to your body, well it usually helps.

My first daughter was on Similac Advance, cried every night. I switched to Soy and she never cried again. My second was breastfed mostly, but then we switched to regular and she was very colicky still (now I think she had a problem with milk too). Now my 3rd, did nothing but cry all day (she was on regular formula) and we went to soy, and it did nothing, and then we went to Similac Alimentum and she was diagnosed with milk/soy protein allergy. It's actually pretty common in babies. Just keep in mind, if you do switch her formula to milk or soy free, it can take up to 2 weeks for the milk to be completely out of her system and for you to see a difference. Also, since you are going tomorrow, bring a poop diaper in to the doctors, and ask if it can be tested, it's a quick test of the poop to see definitively if she has a problem. Good luck!

I used Enfamil Lipil as well and had no problems. If that is the only time of day she's crying, it seems odd that it would be the formula, but maybe. It might not be colic, it just might be her fussy time. Most babies go through a time of day, usually that time in my experience, where they are just fussy. If you can get her to stop crying by going outside then I'd keep doing that!

If you do change formulas, just be on the lookout for possible constipation or other issues. I think you should give the new formula 2 weeks instead of one. We had to switch my son's formula a few times as it turned out he has a milk intolerance and each time we did he got a tiny bit fussy and constipated until he was used to it. I also just wanted to put a shout-out for generic formula! I use it exclusively and it really helps with the bills! It is easily 1/2 the price and it is just fine. After about 6 months of paying the premium prices with my first I decided to switch and it was just fine. My second one has always been on generic and the savings really adds up. I know I bought the generic Enfamil Lipil at Target....just something to think about!

We use Enfamil Lipil but my 1.5 mo old son does the same thing around 6 every night. We started giving him Gripe Water and it seems to calm him. We got it at Target.

I feel for you, because my now 21 month old did the excact same thing at that age. It was in fact colic. She cried at the same time everynight! I BF'd her, so formula was not the issue. Doctor assued me it would only last a few weeks and it did. We were told to buy Gripe water, which helped ALOT!!!! I totally reccommend it. We bought it at Walgreens!! Good luck, I have been in your shoes and I completely know what you are going through. Remember, it will not last forever, I promise :):)

Revised: Yes, this colic episode does occur everynight about the same time, google it and read about it.....Run the vaccuum and see if that helps or a white noise machine. But to me if she's not having any trouble during the day, then it might very well NOT be the formula~~

Similac caused gas for us like NOBODY'S business. It would also go sour very very quickly.

What worked for us was Enfamil Lipil in a can (as in premixed). It's expensive, but it was *fantastic*. ANY of the powdered kind was like flipping a coin as to the side effects.
