Formula/milk - Gurnee,IL

My son is 13 months old now and after his one year appointment I was told to switch him to milk. He hates it, I have tried everything giving it as is cold, warming it, giving it to him in the bottle in a cup....he won't have it! I have been resorting to still giving him his formula he has to drink something. So, how do I get him to drink regular milk?

What can I do next?

My son was the same way. We started to mix the milk in with the formula , starting w/ 3/4 formula and 1/4 milk, and gradually putting more milk in. After about a week he only wanted the milk.

Good luck!

Hi D.,
Children really don't need to have milk. It's a myth. Cow milk is for cows not humans. It's the truth, you might want to Google it and check it out. If you concerned about him getting the proper calcium, you can give him a yummy chewy calcium supplement that you get a the store. Most of the time a good daily diet and multivitamin will be all you need. A child between the ages of 1-3 need about 500 mg of calcium per day.
My son can not tolerate milk at all and it's not a problem for him. I started him on very watered down 100% juices and just plain water.
Best Regards,
C.

This might be a good time to try organic milk--even flavored. You can mix about O. quarter flavored to three quarters plain. And if he doesn't drink a lot of milk, organic lasts longer in the fridge....

wean him onto it. do 90% formula to 10% milk to start and then just gradually add more and more until he is just on cow milk. No huge rush!

Hi D. - I had the same problem with one of my children. My ped. recommended mixing the two together. Start out with an ounce of milk with 7 ounces formula for a few days then gradually an an add'l ounce of milk, taking out 1 ounce of formula. Eventually, he'll get used to the taste and texture of the milk v. the formula. Good Luck.

I agree...don't sweat it! It will all work out. (I know that's hard to imagine right now! Believe me- I've been there!) I was going to suggest mixing the milks- others have suggested this already I see. Also- what about a drop of vanilla in it? I thought of this because of the vanilla rice milk- which is what my little guy likes. Or you could just buy the vanilla rice milk or other milk alternatives. Also, I think you could use the milk in oatmeal and cereals and other forms for now to get a taste of milk, and then just go with water and such for drinks. Good luck! Keep at it...he'll get there eventually. Remember- It takes many many many tastes and tries to finally get into a food for these little ones.

Try mixing equal parts formula and cow's milk. If he'll take that, slowly start reducing the amount of formula in his bottles until he's down to only cow's milk. I did this with my son when we transitioned from breast milk to formula and from formula to cow's milk and never had a problem. Good luck!

Becareful he might be alergic to milk. Some children do not like milk naturally, try give him what he likes, no point forcing him to take what he does not like.

Slowly convert him over. do 75% formula, 25% milk, then a couple days later, do 65% formula, 35% milk, 50%/50%, then 25%/75% then completely 100% milk. It has to be gradual; otherwise, he'll know and won’t drink it. He should be switched over within 3 weeks without a problem.

Our pediatrician suggested a gradual switch to Milk. First we mixed plain yogurt with pureed fruit, and when that went well, we introduced cheese. We spent 3 months giving yogurt and cheese before we made the switch from formula to milk.
Does you son like yogurt and cheese?

My son didn't like milk when I switched him. What worked for us was starting him on 2% milk, and gradually adding in whole milk until we were on whole milk entirely. It took about three months. I've always told him that if he's not hungry, or didn't want to eat something, then that was fine, he didn't have to. He's never liked anything with a lot of fat in it, and now, at two, his favorite foods are steamed vegetables. Your son could have the same dislike of fatty foods. This is a good thing.

My son didn't like milk at first either so we went from formula to toddler formula and then I mixed the toddler formula with milk. No he loves milk and I have to limit his intake a little bit.

There are so many other 'milks' out there now. Try almond, coconut, or soy milk. If your son doesn't like it, there are plenty of other ways to get calcium--especially cheese, which most kids LOVE! Don't sweat it. Just keep up with the water, and a good balanced diet.

When I switched both of my boys, I slowly weaned them onto it. I did 75% formula, 25% milk for a couple of days. Then 50/50 for a couple days, then 25/75 for a couple days and then straight milk. I did try to just switch over at once, but neither of them would take it and it seemed to bother their stomach. I found that weaning them help with both problems.

Also, try flavoring it - either with chocolate, strawberry or even banana syrup.

Good luck and may you enjoy not having to buy formula anymore!

Maybe you could mix the milk and formula together for a while and slowly decrease the amount of the formula. It might help your son adjust to the new taste.

you could try mixing it gradually into his formula? maybe quarter milk and 3 quarters formula, then gradually increasing it until he is having just milk? i did this with my daughter and it worked well for her, if he really doesn't like it i don't think being on formula until he gets used to milk will harm him. good luck!!

Doing it gradually like the other posters works best. Also, my pediatrician told me that kids fortified oj is the same as whole milk, glass for glass in everything except protein. I had this same question. I posted it on here and got some decent responses on substitutes if you want to go back and look.

For the oj, that is if it is not watered down. Also, using a little bit of chocolate in the milk is better than no milk at all. I used ovaltine, and just a tiny bit. But really the only thing that worked for mine was doing it gradually and giving it time. He refused it for months, but then one day just started drinking it just fine. Just keep offering a little a time.

I would try the other mom's suggestions first, but I agree with Caroline R. 100%. If after trying the mixing, soy milks, etc. you can't find anything he likes.... don't sweat it. Children do not need cow's milk, and I wouldn't continue to give your son formula after the doctor told you to stop it... it can cause weight and other problems. My son hasn't had "milk" since he was weaned from formula at 11 months old. We just make sure to give him yogurt, cheeses, and a vitamin with added calcium to get his calcium and vitamin D intake. His pediatrician is fine with this, and tests his vitamin levels frequently... which are always right on the money. Try giving him water to drink with maybe a bit of juice for flavor... and stock up on yogurt. Good luck!! :)

mix the Formula with milk... then gradually over time, lessen the proportion of Formula in it. Gradually.

Or, use "Toddler Formula." There is such a thing.

All the best,
