Hi Moms,

I recently stopped breastfeeding my almost 3 week old baby this past Saturday and have been powder formula feeding since then, she is consuming 4 oz of formula every 3 hours, my husband thinks that might be too much for her since she is barely going to be 3 weeks old, but she continues to drink until the bottle is empty, i do burp her after 2 oz and after she is done with the bottle, am i overfeeding her or is that normal for her weeks, plz help, my last daughter is 5 years old and i dont recall how much she ate at that stage :(

What can I do next?

as a mom of 5 HEALTHY, STRONG, Beautiful young adults, now. I say let her eat what she will eat. There will be times on and off that she will not want it and there will be times she will want more... I hope it's a good powder formula, one simular to mothers milk.. that seems to be the one with the best results in the long run. (I did that with mine, and they all are 6ft and over and at the ideal weight. 4 boys 1 girl ).

I have a ten week old and he drinks almost 7 ounces every 3-4 hours. When he was your daughters age he was also drinkine 4 ounces every 3 hours. When I took him for his 2 week appointment his doctor asked me how much formula he was comsuming and how often. I told her 4 ounces or more every 3 hours and she didn't seem to be concerned. Hope this helps. :)

My 2 1/2 year old son was not allowed to come home from NICU at the hospital until he WAS eating 4 oz every 3 hours! He was 17 days old when he was discharged.

Neither of my boys (my oldest is 16 years old) ever took a full 8 oz bottle at a feeding though, so your daughter will probably start consuming about 6 oz here in a couple of months, or sooner, and that may be all she takes at a feeding of formula.

You'll want to start introducing cereals when she is about 4 months old.

Congratulations on your new baby girl! (And don't pay attention to anyone who might have the nerve to tell you you stopped breastfeeding too early; I wasn't able to nurse either of my boys, and they are both healthy, happy, and SMART!) :)

Hi E.,
I have a three month old daughter who is also formula fed... she may be having a growth spurt! My daughter is just now taking four regularly, but during growth spurts has taken anywhere from an extra 2-3 ounces than normal. So when she was regularly doing two ounces, she might take five or six during a growth spurt. Also, if she wasn't getting enough from breastfeeding, she may be just really hungry and compensating. My daughter was really hungry from not getting enough due to milk allergy, when we got her on the right formula she gained 1 lb 5 ouces in a week! And then went back to normal. Also that is great advice about calling the pedi. That's what they are there for! Good luck, J.

I agree with the last mom. Sounds like a great schedule/routine and that she's eating just fine.
Also, don't be afriad to call your pediatrician's office with these kinds of questions. That's what they're here for, and they should always be the definitive source for things like this (i.e., not your well-meaning hubby) :-)

She is supposed to be eating 4 oz of either breast or bottle.

To get an idea of how much your baby should be eating, my pediatrician and lactation consultant gave me a formula to use. You just take the baby's weight x 2.5

That's roughly how many ounces they should be getting in 24 hours. You can divide that number by how many feeds you are doing in a day to get how much they should be eating at each feed. It helped me. Good luck!

E.,

I would say your doing just fine as long as she is finishing all of it with in 30 minutes and isn't spitting up to much.

Good Luck and Congrats,
J.

I would encourage you to keep providing breastmilk to your baby it is so much healthier, i know it can be overwhelming in the begining. Even if you dont put her to the breast, you can still pump at least 8x day for 15-20 min and keep a good supply. I would reccomend a good double electric pump like medela, even better yet a medela hospital grade rental. you can find local rental stations by going to medela.com. 4 oz does sound like to much but it also depends on her weight, my best advice is to call the doctor they have a formula where they figure up how many oz they should have based on weight, and with a newborn you want to burp every 1/2 oz. good luck..
