My four month old son has had problems with Enfamil formula. The powder made him constipated and the concentrate made him very gassy. Has anyone used Good Start? Any suggestions on different types/brands of formula?

What can I do next?

Hi C., My friend used Good Start and she has very good results with it. She had the same problem so she used the Good Start and her baby didn't have any more problems. Another one is the Enfamil Gentlease, it's basicaly the same concet as the Good Start, I had to use this with my daughter because of her getting so gassy and it worked well. Good luck!

Hi, C....

We use Enfamil Lipil Gentle-ease. It's broken down a bit more than average formula to help with the gassiness. (In fact, it's specifically for babies that had trouble with gas). Hope you are able to find something that works for you! :)

Blessings,
V.

Most formula has to much iron in it that is fortified incorrectly. I recommend using the low iron similac formula or the organic similac. When my oldest son went on formula we had the same problem thats when my mom told me that iron that they use in formula is fortified incorrecly. The next time that I had to buy formula I looked for any kind that did not say 'fortified with iron'. I couldn't find any then I was Similac low iron and tried that it worked right away. He finally was having bowel movements more often then before. When my second son went on formula they had just come out with similac orgainc and this did not make him constipated. Let me know if this helps.

My baby had the same problem. I tried almost all brand (Enfamil, Good Start, Walmart, Soy, etc), and the one that worked better for him was Similac.
However, I think that there are some Similac and even Enfamil formulas that avoid the gassy situation and even the colic symptoms, but I didn’t try those.

My daughter was the same way... She was very sensitive to formula after nursing for 2 months, but to help her with gas we used gas drops (mylicon or generic) and that really helped. Also we use the Parent's Choice Organic formula from Walmart which is half the price but has the same ingredients. Sometimes is just takes a little time for the baby to adjust. I would really recommend Parent's Choice.

I had tried Enfamil and similac and both made my son have diarreah, gassy, and excessive spitup. I even tried gentleease. Gentleease helped a little. Then I put my son on Good Start and he has been a 100% better. I love Good Start. It is real gentle on their stomachs.

I used good start with my oldest daughter and she did just fine. My youngest had trouble with her disgestive system and we are now using Similac Allimentum. I have also used Soy with both girls.

I've been giving my 6 month old daughter good start supreme with DHA/ARA (Concentrated) since she was born and haven't had any problems. That is what they were giving her in the hospital when she was born. Good Luck to you

My oldest had trouble with milk protein and cried nonstop for the first 4 months of her life - and I was breastfeeding! She was gassy and constipated and miserable. We started soy formula at 4 months and immediately she was an angel.
Good luck,

When my son was an infant, we had the same problem but with Similac. In fact, he was so constipated there would be a little blood present after he'd try to force out the teeniest bit of poo. Anyway, I immediately called our pediatrician and he recommended GoodStart - and it was perfect. I actually tried both the "regular" kind and DHA/ARA and didn't observe any difference between the two.

His constipation eased up, went away, and we never had another problem. I started my newborn daughter (now 7 mos) on it immediately and never had any gas or pooping issues. I highly recommend GoodStart!

I had the same problem with DD...she had a terrible time going #2...plus had acid reflux. The Good Start really helped her to go to the bathroom...and was easiest on her reflux too. Go for it!!!

I loved the Good Start - but on WIC you had to have a prescription and even then you had to retest the Enfamil every 3 months. We ended up using the Enfamil Gentleease Formula and had tons of success on that.

I like the Good Start over the regular Enfamil for 3 reasons: 1)my son could digest it better (he had acid reflux) 2)the smell from the spitup didn't stink as much on G.S. 3)The regular Enfamil spitup would stain his clothes.

Good luck.

We always used the Walmart brand Parent's choice and never had a problem. It has the exact same ingredients and nutrition as most formula. With my first I used the soy and she got rid of the gas problem.

Hi-My son is just about 6 months and we started him on Enfamil also, we tried powder and ready made and both made him very gassy and very crabby. We switched him to Good Start and haven't had a problem since. I have a girlfriend that is a nurse and works with alot of babies and she told me she has seen alot of babies that have problems with the Enfamil because it has too much iron in it. I hope this helps, good luck :)

I used Similac (Soy) for my son. Have you thought about trying Soy formula? It could be his little body doesn't like regular formula. My son had similar symptoms and we changed him to Soy and it was like night and day.

I just had a similar problem with my two month old. He was very gassy and spit up a lot. I had to switch him to Enfamil AR which has been wonderful(though very expensive). I am also an infant caregiver and most of my parents use Good Start and it really agrees with alot of the infants that I care for! Good Luck!

We used Good Start with our son - it was all he could tolerate. My husband & I jokingly called it "pre-digested formula." :)

It was easy on his stomach - he did get gassy, but honestly never was constipated. The only thing that was surprising (and was normal) is that he had blue-ish poops sometimes. It was odd, but okay. A dose of "Little Tummies" or mylicon gas drops always took care of the gas too.

Our pediatrician also told us that it was really unnecessary to buy formula with DHA/ARA additives, and that standard-regular formula was fine as formula goes.

Hope that helps!

I used Good Start with my now 3yr old son. It was what my doctor recommended. I didn't buy the DHA/ARA stuff though.

Good Start is usually cheaper than Enfamil & Similac.

Good Luck!!

i've used good start and had no problems with it. the only thing is that its not as fine as the enfamil so u have to shake it up really well so that it doesnt clog the nipple.

We've always purchased GoodStart with DHA and ARA. The commercials sold us on it and I don't know why we kept and keep buying GoodStart. Word of mouth also helped us decide. The DHA and ARA helps give your baby the things breastmilk would offer I guess. You can read this too.

C.,
My son, when he was younger, experienced problems with Enfamil and Similac as well. We switched to Good Start, which helped significantly. He did not have the gas problems or fussiness like he did with the other ones.

Good Start seemed to be a little gentler on his stomach, which made his life and ours so much easier.

Hope this helps!

You could try adding a little prune juice to the formula to help with the constipation. I had to do that with both my kids because they put so much iron in those formulas.

My 5 yr old was on Enfamil and it made her get tummy aches so I used Goodstart and it worked awesome. My son had projectile vomiting and I used GoodStart and it worked nice but Enfamil has a formula called Gentlease and that is just like Goodstart but has alittle more nutrients and has less lactose which alot of infants cannot handle and it cured his vomiting. My 11 month old daughter has been on Gentlease her whole life and has not had a single problem. I would suggest Gentlease first it is also WIC approved without a doctors note. It also helps with fussiness and gas which it tells you that right on the label. I think it is one step higher than Goodstart. I even tried that Nutramigen with my son and its $25 for a small can that lasts 3 days. I would definetely suggest Gentlease first.

We have used every kind of formula with all of our children. Whatever kind I can get for free or cheap with the checks and coupons. They have never been picky. BUT, to help with the gassy and such you should try GRIPE WATER. You can get it at your local health food store (our grocery store has it in their healthfood section too). You just put a little but in the bottle of formula or you can even give it straight in the mouth. Our infant right now is still breast feeding and is a very gassy baby, I just give it to her straight in her mouth and it works awesome. We used gas drops with our first two children and then when we had our thrid we were told about gripe water. I will never buy anything else. It is about $10 a bottle but that is comperable to what gas drops cost. Try it it just may work with whatever formula you use. GOod luck.
