The best way is to gradually decrease. Some babies don't like the taste of whole milk right away and this will also help their digest system get used to the change. If you are still using a bottle this is a good time to start transitioning to a sippy cup too.

Good luck!

We switched gradually... but we waited until 18mo. The World Health Org & APA & similar medical orgs recommend nursing/formula until age 2 (primary source of nutrition until at least age 1), but we were spending $20 a day on formula and just couldn't take it as far as our budget was concerned any longer.

We just quit and switched over to milk.

My daughter had no issues.

Either way.
There is no 'rule' to it.
My Daughter (breastfed) just switched over with NO problem.
My son, had to be transitioned to it.... by putting part breast/part whole milk... in varying ratios... first. He would not take whole milk, straight.

each kid is different.

Use WHOLE milk only, recommended for kids through 2 years old. The 'milk fats' in it is an essential nutrient for brain-growth.
Use organic, preferably. It has no hormones in it.
all the best,
Susan

We started giving milk in a cup (regular, not sippy) probably at 8-10 months, and then started decreasing the frequency of bottles. We gave up the bedtime bottle last, probably at 13 months or so. I think the recommendations are whole milk (unless weight problem or some family cholesterol/heart disease risk factors) until age 2 and then switching to 2%. DS LOVED the stuff so we did not have a problem.

Its easiest on their system to make the switch 1 oz at a time (for example: 3 oz formula, 1 oz milk; a week later 2 oz formula, 2 oz milk...and so on).

With my son, we eliminated the bedtime bottle first, at about 9 1/2 months (we started giving it to him before bath instead of after) and at 10 months we got rid of the bottles and switched him to sippy cups.

Also, whole milk is needed for the first 2 yrs because they need the fat for brain development. I don't spend the extra money for organic milk because if you read all milk cartons (at least here) they tell you that there are no hormones or antibiotics given to their cows.

I prefer to transition gradually. Both of mine were over a year old before making the switch from breastmilk to whole milk.

Unless your child has a serious weight issue and it is doctor recommended do not use skim milk. Use whole milk. Toddlers needs the fats. It is essential for brain growth and development. 16-20 ounces per day is the recommended amounts.

Hi sammy's mommee

It really depends on your kid. my daughter LOVED whole milk, she LOVED her new sippy cups and once she got a taste of it she wanted no more formula. ever. again.

My nephew had to be weaned. my sil kept adding milk to the formula in a sippy cup until there was only milk (took about 3 weeks).

I would try giving her a sippy cup of whole milk and see what she does with it. You didn't ask this.... but if you haven't weaned her to a sippy or a regular cup from a bottle this is a GREAT chance to do it!

Yeah - good luck and it felt really great to have the extra money that I wasn't spending on formula!!!!!!!
