I didn't breastfeed my first son... So when I had to wean him off of formula, I slowly introduced milk to him.. Like once a day, then more as the days went on.. It worked great.
My daughter is a year old and we have to get her off formula...my question is, does anyone know a good way to do this, without makeing her constapated?
Wow! I've certainly found that mixing the milk with formula and gradually changin the percentage of the milk vs. formula ratio really helps! Thank you all so very much! So far, we're having no problems!

I have found that the best way to do this is to use a mixture of milk and formula. About every three or four days changes the % of each. First, three parts formula, one part milk, than two parts formula, two parts milk, next one part formula, three parts milk, and last 100% milk. THis such give her body time to adjust to the cows milk with little or no problems.
When I switched my son off of formula at one year, I just started giving him whole milk. If she gets constipated, I suggest replace one formula bottle with whole milk a day for a week, then two a day for the second week, then all milk after that.

Hi my name is Toni.
I just went throught this with my 14month old. I found it works if you 1/2 milk and water the first week during the day and formula at night. I didn't have trouble with constapation. I had trouble with him taking the milk at first. It was cold, he did not like that.
I hope you find what works for you good luck.
i always thought cold turkey was the quickest and easiest. i wouldn't worry about constipation as the large amount of iron in formula is more likely to cause that then not having it.
yes if you mix the formula and whole milk 1/2 of each for about a week it will work my daughter had to do it that way dr recommended it to me
Hello J. P,
How i got my son off the formula was to mix half or more milk with the formula. my son is now 2.

It will take a month but here is how you do it so she won't get direaha.
Week 1: 6oz formula 2oz whole milk
Week 2: 4oz formula 4oz whole milk
Week 3: 2oz formula 6oz whole milk
Week 4: 8oz whole milk!!!!!
And your done and what I did is I took my kids off the bottle when they got on 8oz of milk. Then your done with both!!! Hope this helps.
When I was getting my children off of formula, I would mix regular milk with the formula. 50% 2% milk and 50% formula. Neither one were constipated. After a few days of this slowly make it more regular milk instead of formula.
My son was breastfed for 9 months and then switched to formula. He has very recently turned one and we've switched him to whole milk. For the first week I did as the doctor recommended - mixed bottles with half formula and half milk. Then just bottles of milk and he never had any trouble at all with the switch. I used the same method when switching from breastmilk to formula with no problems. Now I need to get him off the bottle! Good luck.
im weaning my son off formula right now also. he normally drinks a 6 ounce bottle so the first week i made 5 ounces of formula with 1 ounce of whole milk. the next week i went to 4 ounces of formula mixed with 2 ounces of milk, now were up to a half and half bottle, 3 ounces milk to 3 ounces of formula. he hasnt had any problems because the transitions been slow. each week you will want to continue to increase the amount of milk and decrease the amount of formula until theres only milk. i hope this helps!
Hi there, we went through this ourselves and got advise from our sons GI doctor. You slowly mix the formula with milk to start slowly taking her off. We started at 10 months old though. It took about 2 to 3 months to get it done. Just add like 1 - 2 ozs at first and slowly get to where you are off the formula, we are still mixing milk though, 5 1/2 oz of milk to like 3 1/2 oz of water. We suffered very little constipation with it. Also we used 2%
Formula is a GREAT source of major nutrients, and I was taken off the WIC program (dont know if this is the reason u're stopping, but it was my issue), so I thought about stopping formula... but sometimes my son doesn't eat all his nutrients, etc, and so i compensate with formula. i did something similar to another responder, where i would do part milk, part forumula, and after about a week, it was good. my son still drinks either, straight milk, straight formula, or mix of half and half! i got an easy kid, but i would mix the formula with the milk. if u can consider staying on formula, what I do is buy a BIG can of the powder, in an "advance" formula for toddlers, and give it to him once a day or so, in case he didn't eat well that day. doing that, i've had a huge can of formula for a few weeks now! i'm still saving money and he's still getting nutrients!
