My 3yr old daughter was doing wonderful on potty training. She was wearing "big girl" panties all day and using the bathroom on her own until last week. We had an accident when she held it too long and then lost control. since then it has happened 3 more times. at first atributed it to too much excitement going on 4th of july weekend. But the latest episode happened today (mon the 7th).She had just finished lunch and was watching tv when she suddenly got up and ran to the front door yelling potty and had an accident in front of the door. I don't know why she chose there or why she didn't go to the bathroom and I don't know how to handle it. do I tried comforting her at first and explaining she needs to go more often during the day9as well as promting her during the day by asking do you need to potty?) I've unfortunatly yelled at her(this last episode where there was no reason I could see and had she tried she would have made it to the potty). I don't know what to do, has any one else had this problem?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the resposes. It isgood to know taht other kids have accidents and that they went on without problems. She is doing great now, no more accidents and when we ask her if she wants to go potty she will try instead of immediatly saying no and running off to play.

I don't think this is uncommon. It seems that she doesn't want to stop what she is doing to go potty and then waits too long. My kids have done the same thing. Just remind her that what she is doing will be there when she gets back.

Good luck

My daughter went through the same thing. I talked to her about not holding it too long and asked her frequently through out the day if she had to go. It was just a phase and she was back on track in a few weeks.

It sounds like she is still getting this figured out! Talk about what happened- did she get confused and go to the wrong door? Potty training is a process and there are regressions and progress. You will probably want to remind her during the day and sometimes we make our son go even though he says he doesn't have to- because we all go before we leave for the store or something like that. It is not her- it is everyone that has to go. Good luck!

There's no magic solution. You just have to be patient. And certainly never yell or punish your child for having an accident. That will only set you way back. She'll go when she's ready. Our 3 year old boy was doing very well all last summer and fall when he was 2, wearing underpants all day with minimal accidents, while at home. But then he started getting his 2 year molars, I got pregnant and we moved.... needless to say we're starting all over again with potty training. You have be patient.

Accidents are common at this age, as is holding it too long.
Just make sure your daughter is not sore "down there". If they don't wipe well, they can become irritated, and then sometimes hold it in as long as possible if it hurts to go.
If this is not the problem, just be patient and make sure your daughter goes to the bathroom often to try to go. Good luck.

My daughter was day trained at 18 mos, but only recently (right after her 5th bday) did she become trained through the night. Part of it is genetics, her father and I both had issues until around 5, but the other who knows. We did find that after 2.5 or so she would only wet at night once in awhile and we soon noticed that growth spurts went along with it. Maybe it is as simple as a growth spurt or at her age who wants to stop the fun to go potty?!? =) She'll get it have faith and as much patience and laundry detergetn as possible. Good Luck!
