Hi mommas about 2 yrs ago I fractured the cuboid bone in my foot and had to wear a cast. The ortho Dr. said that I would probably always have some sort of aches or pains in my foot. Which I do. Every time it rains or I'm walking for long periods of time. My question is does anyone have any suggestions for a good foot support. We are going on vacation next month and will be doing a lot of walking. I brought some great sneakers, but I still think I may need some extra support.

What can I do next?

Try Dansko shoes. They have fabulous support and comfort and come in tons of styles. There is an outlet store in West Grove, PA as well as online: www.dandkooutlet.com; www.dansko.com.

You could try to strengthen the muscles in the arch of your foot by taking a hand towel or wash cloth, laying it flat on the floor and scrunch it up, pulling it toward you. Do only as much as you can pain free, stop when/if your foot feels tired. You can also ease pain by doing an ice massage - fill a water bottle with water and freeze; put bottle on floor and rub your foot heel to toe for 5 to 10 minutes. This is also great to prevent foot pain if you do it after prolonged walking/standing. I give these exercises to my patient all the time and they work very well.

Hi, S.:

Drug stores usually carry ankle supports that slip on the foot. See
if you can find one.

Take time out to get a good lotion and massage your foot, ankle, and lower leg every day at a routine time, of course, massaging the other side would help you feel balanced at the end of the massage.

Good luck. D.

My foot doctor feels that the inserts made by New Balance are better than custom orthotics. I agree because I have had both. I got mine at a New Balance store but a regular sporting goods store may have them

Super feet is an insert that you can buy for you shoes. They help give you better arch support or what ever support you need. I have some for my work boots and my feet are not as tired the next morning.

I would either go back to where you got the sneakers, if it is a specialty store, or go to a specialty store and ask for some support inserts. When I was 7.5 months pregnant two years ago, I went to a New Balance store, and let them know that I was going to Europe and would be walking ALOT. They were able to find an insert that felt great to me.

You may need orthodics (inserts in your shoes) for extra support. Although they can be pricey, I believe I heard Secet Sneaker had a machine you stand on and it makes them for you pretty inexpensive - worth taking a look at.

I highly recommend Ecco shoes. They are expensive but so worth it. They are supportive and so comfortable. They come in a range of styles. Good luck!

I have fallen arches and my arches get very sore when I am on my feet for a long period of time. When I was younger, I got custom orthodics to put in my shoes through a physical therapist. They are molded specifically to my feet and provide my arches with the support they need. These are the only things that provide me with relief- no matter what type of shoe I buy it doesn't matter unless I have the orthodics. You can ask your doctor about where you could get fitted for orthodics. Your health insurance might cover it too.
