Foods While Breast Feeding

I know when the baby is a new born, you must be careful of certain food that can make baby gassy. My daughter is almost 8 months old, gets solid food once a day, breast fed the rest. I am DYIN' for some cabbage and noodles (must be the weather) and would love to make it for dinner.. but will my girl be wrecked from it? Cabbage can make one gassy..
I ask this because according to solid food guildlines, she can start eating things like brocolli, and that is gassy in and of itself.. Not sure what to do. Thanks!

It's safe to try some cabbage and noodles if you want. Some notoriously foods may not necessarily make all babies gassy, and if they do, they may not be uncomfortably gassy, rather they may just fart a lot, and that certainly isn't bothersome to the child.

There are really very few rules when it comes to what to eat and drink when you are breastfeeding. If you see that it makes her fussy, then you will know to stop.

I see no reason why you shouldn't try eating some cabbage. Your daughter is old enough to be able to get rid of any gas she might get from it, that's why the doctors say she can eat gas producing foods like broccoli herself. Be prepared for any possible changes in her stools though. They may become a bit loose for a day or two. This is not necessarily unhealthy for her, I only mention it because it can be more work for you. If it does bother her too much (although, I really doubt it will), you will know to wait until she is weaned before eating foods like cabbage again. Just remember, all children are different. What bothers one child may not bother another.

I suppose gas, while uncomfortable, is a short-term thing; you could always just try it and see.

Gas is a sign of an imbalance in the digestive system. I have found that getting the body back into balance can eliminate such problems. I am a wellness coach and can fill you in on it if you are interested.

She's not a newborn anymore at 8 months. Have the cabbage, and enjoy! Just don't go too too crazy with it!

If your craving is that strong, I say go for it but not before you buy some mylecon drops. They are a godsend w/the whole gas thing. Good luck & enjoy!

L., all babies can respond differently to things that mom eats. Not every baby will become uncomfortably gassy when breastfeeding after mom eats cabbage. If you are very worried about it, pump ahead of time for a couple of feedings, and pump and dump those couple of feedings after the cabbage.
Good luck!

I think those guidelines only really apply to a newborn. I am pretty sure you can eat anything at this point and it really should not bother the baby. BTW, are you Hungarian?

I personally don't see any issues with offering a couple of tablespoons of mushed up broccoli or cabbage for that matter. If you're still mostly nursing and just supplementing with solid food, then that little bit of food really shouldn't be a problem.
I would say make the meal and then offer what you feel comfortable with, whether that's cabbage or something you know your child likes and won't upset the tummy.
Good luck.

Hi L.,

it is really trial and error to find out what food make her gassy; it is not true that cabbage affect every infant; since you are cooking the cabbage it may be fine
just enjoy and find out if it is ok or not, D.
