She will not qualify because she is still married!
I have a question about foodstamps. I know someone who just bought and finance a new car, and now she and her spouse are splitting up and she is needing help to feed her 4 children, so she is wanting to apply for food stamps, but not sure if she qualifies now that she has a new car SHE GOT THE CAR BEFORE THEY SPLIT. She doesn't want to let it go because it will mess her credit up Does anyone know if this will go against her getting help,
She will not qualify because she is still married!
She can qualify if she is still married if they are separated. If they have separate households then all those questions are answered in the application and in the interview.
No the car will not affect her as I was in the same situation when I had to apply.
Yes I am still married but my husband is not able to provide for us at this time and is not living in our home currently.
Food stamps work differently than other welfare programs. The car will most likely not affect her chances of getting them. Cars are a necessity these days.
Its based on overall income, not assets. For food stamps, especially if there are kids involved, the income cap is much higher than other forms of welfare. Now, they may ask uncomfortable questions about why the dad is not contributing and exactly why they need the food stamps.
Each state is different but generally the car will not be considered a "countable asset" because it is a necessity. She can still apply for assistance even though they are married, however if he is still living in the house she will need to report his income. If he has moved out then only her income should count. If he is paying any child support that will also need to be reported. Her best bet is to go to the local social services office and ask for an application. Fill it out the best she can and then make an appointment for an intake interview. The eligibility worker will be able to answer all her questions and determine if she is eligible or not.
