Food Ideas for 1St Birthday Party

My son is turning one on July 20th. We are having his party at the YMCA from 3-6. We will have cake, gifts, etc the first hour and then we will head to the pool. My question...other than cake and drinks, what other food shall I provide? I chose 3:00 so he could still get a nap but also so I wouldn't have to provide a full meal. There will be mostly adults and some children, most being older. Also, any recommendations on games and party favors? Remember, most of the guests will be older. Should I just skip all of that stuff and just do cake and gifts? Swimming will be the main activity.

What can I do next?

HI T. . . . It's crazy how fast the time flies . . . We just had my lo bday in April. We catered in bbq. I would say to serve food since the party will be going through dinner time??? WE bought jump ropes/bubbles for the older kids @ the party (we only had about 5) . . but since there is swimming you may not need to do anything! Good luck w/birthday party! Let us know what you decide!

You could do the small uber-easy stuff... cheese cubes and crackers, or a prepared veggie tray. I wouldn't go hog wild. It's a snacky time of day. Not a dinner time. :) HTH!

For my son's first birthday party, I had a pinata and it went over well since there were older kids there.
I don't think the Y will let you hang anything from their ceiling, but you could hang it from a tree outside.
Also, I have seen a pail full of apples and water- bobbing for apples, a pond full of water and floating ducks. The duck with the mark on the bottom, that child get a prize.
The YMCA is a great place to have it.

July 20 is when the men landed on the moon. I am not sure if this is something that could affect your ideas for the party. (I know this because it is my birthday too) I was and still am proud that this was my birthday. Anyway, I think space games or party favors would be cute, if not this year, maybe a future party. I like to at least have little goody bags for the kids as they leave.

I always put out a tray of fresh fruit, sometimes dip. It can just be a healthy snack or possibly the main thing for someone who chooses to not have cake. As for the party I would skip that part and just enjoy your sons birthday and the company.
