Food Allergy? - Galloway,OH

I have three children. My youngest turned one on Friday. I am worried that she has some sort of food allergy, but I can't pin point what it is. When she eats Macaroni & Cheese, or a piece of American Cheese her face becomes bright red whereever the food has touched. This same reaction also happens when she eats butter. Could she be a allergic to dairy or milk? She LOVES yogurt, but seems cranky in the afternoon after eating it. She has had some trouble with ear infections lately as well. I took her off of Formula (she was taking soy formula) this week and began giving her soy milk, but I am not sure this is helping. She is still cranky and pooing a lot (3 days a day). Our ped has referred us to an allergist, I am just waitin on them to call to schedule the appointment. Any thoughts/experiences with this? What could be going on?

I would definitely say allergy. Sounds like it to me. Hopefully you get into allergy soon. We have been dealing with allergies since my son was born. If you are seeing a definite reaction like the red face..do not give that food anymore. What you are seeing is not all that is happening..just imagine how is insides are looking if his face is that red..

Try goat milk and goat cheese for a couple weeks and see if it fixes it. Goat milk is the closest to human milk.

It definantly sounds like a milk allergy. All three of my children had milk allergies when young. My oldest grew out of it at 2 years, my youngest grew out of it at one year and my middle one continues to be highly allergic to milk - among other things(he is 8 years old now). He had similar symptoms - cheeks red and itchy. He also would get hives in the place that the milk touched. Be careful with soy, however. Many children who are allergic to the protien in milk (which is most likely what it is for your child) also have problems with soy. It was soy milk that created chronic congestion, a severe asthma attack and hospitalization for my son when he was almost one. Other options for "milk" would be rice milk or almond milk. I would definantly get her to an allergist - be sure it is a pediatric allergist with a good reputation. I live in the central ohio area and can give you the name of a great pediatric allergist if you are intested.

I am a SAHM of 3 children - 11, 8, 4 1/2.

if your child is allergic to milk, it's very possible she's also allergic to soy. try cutting both of them out for a week, and see if there is a change for the better.

macaroni and cheese, american cheese, and many yogurts have food dyes in them, many of which are made with synthetic ingredients. could also be that.

My youngest (now almost 3) had an allergy to the milk protein. It started at about 6 months and she outgrew it by the time she turned two.

Once they narrowed down the issue we had to switch to Nutramigen formula. She had no issues after that. Once we stopped using formula we changed to rice milk. Walmart does not seem to carry it anymore, but she still drinks it(love it) and we buy it at Kroger and Meijer. If she is having issues with Soy (our daughter did too) I would try the rice milk.

Good luck!

Hi C.,

Yes, it sounds like it could be an allergy, maybe to dairy, but it also could be an allergy to additives or preservatives. I'd compare the labels of all three items you mentioned (mac & cheese, American cheese, and the yogurt) and see if there are any ingredients found in all three, or in both the cheese items.

Also, you may get some clues as to what it is by thinking about when it started. Has she eaten these items before with no problems? If so, did anything else change when she started having the trouble?

Just as a sobering side comment, I have heard of people whose skin tests were normal for certain substances, but they felt much better after eliminating them from their diet.

Soon you will be able to add the title "detective" to your resume.......

Good luck, and let us know what happens!

From what it sounds like, she's probably allergic to dairy and maybe the yogurt is causing her tummy to hurt. (Gastrointestinal distress from the good bacteria.) A sore tummy will make anyone cranky!
I know regular yogurt made my daughter go potty lots and it made her tummy hurt. They have special yogurt that isn't as strong w/ the good bacteria made esp. for kids and babies. I switched and my little girl doesn't have nearly the same amount of problems. I believe it's made of soy, but I can't remember the name. Maybe another mom will know.
The Dr. will be able to pinpoint exactly what items she is allergic to. They do a skin test and looks worse than it actually is. Thankfully, if it is a dairy allergy, there are tons of alternatives out there. There is even soy cheese.
Good luck and I hope your baby gets better soon.

C.,

Just a note regarding eliminating dairy from the diet. It actually takes a couple of weeks to truly flush one's system of dairy, so it may take that long to start seeing any improvement. My children are allergic to dairy and their main systems are digestive (not skin reaction), but everyone is different. Also, has she had a cold recently? I find that certain brands of Kleenex (usually the ones with lotion in them) irritate my children's skin and turn their cheeks bright red.

I'd recommend getting her in to the allergist as soon as possible to get tested. Good luck.

Are you in the Fishers area? I know of a natural med doc who specialized in allergies & asthma. She works with LOTS of kids. In addition, might want to think about the CHEMICALS in the mac & cheese and/or yogurt, NOT just the dairy. Might try organic. I've heard more than one mom talk about what a HUGE difference in their child when switching to organic. Yes, more expensive, but may take care of some of the digestive and/or constipation issues.

Dear C.,

Your daughter could absolutely be allergic to dairy, and it sounds like she is. Try removing all dairy from her diet immediately, and give it about two weeks to see how she is.

I am a grandmother, and have had health problems all my life. My grandson was diagnosed with a severe allergy to dairy when he was an infant. Just last year, I began seeing an Integrative M.D. who removed all diary and wheat from my diet, and all of my former problems have vanished completely.

Bovine dairy is not even close to being natural to the human body, and it is one of the top food allergies, usually going undiagnosed.

You can find wonderful dairy alternatives ~ Stonyfield farms (available in just abut all grocery stores) yogurt is extremely tasty, and my grandson loves it.

Here's their web site: http://www.stonyfield.com/AboutUs/MoosReleases_Display.cf...

There's a lot of hidden dairy in foods. Look for casein and whey on labels. They are both dairy ingredients and can cause problems. Read labels closely.

Good luck!

If you need additional information about avoiding diary, I'll be glad to send you some suggestions. Just send me a private message, and I'll reply ASAP.

Also ~ I see you're in the Columbus area. If you're interested in seeing a wonderful Integrative M.D. who uses traditional and alternative medicine, mine is great. She began her career as a pediatrician, and her treatment worked so well for her young patients, she began seeing their parents too. Now she has a family practice. She's the one whose advice changed my life for the better. She's in the phone book: Sandra Pinkham M.D.

Definitely sounds like a dairy allergy. Some people are just allergic to the proteins in milk, so buying Lactaid may allow her to still drink cow's milk. Others are allergic to the enzymes and protein. You have to look close on ingrediants in prepackaged and canned foods to avoid the milk protein called "casein".

It sounds like a dairy allergy to me! Just cut out all dairy for now. You may have to wait a few weeks or longer for the appointment with the allergist. Check labels carefully, as ingredients like whey and caesin are milk products. It may takes several days or weeks for it to all get out of her system and to see an improvement. Good luck!

It sounds like a dairy intolerance, I would remove it from her diet and see how she responds.Unless her BM's are runny I wouldn't worry about her going 3 times a day. I have gone 3 times a day since I was a child and no problems. We eat at least 3 times a day so we should go that much. The longer BM sits in there the worse we feel. You can replace her dairy with other things that have calcium for those little growing bones and expanding mind.Soy is a good alternative if she likes it. I found formula's seemed to constipate all the little ones in my life. One Grandchild we had to make almond milk for every day as she had a fail to thrive disease, it kept her going for a year longer than the doctors thought she would live.Sadly she was just too sick to go any further.
I would not wait on the allergist to call you, I would call them and tell them you have great concern about her and you want to see the Dr. as soon as possible.
My friends son had red blotches every time he ate any thing with tomatoes sauce in it, it was just a skin allergy.Once she kept his face clean while he was eating it stopped happening. I know how hard it is to wipe a babies face when they don't want you too but sometimes it is the only way to keep the skin from being effected.

Hi C.,

My daughter is allergic to eggs and peanuts (she is now 2.5 and was diagnosed at 1 year) and we had the same symptoms as what you are describing. I would definitely recommend taking your daughter to an allergist as soon as possible to see what they can do for her. You may even want to see about getting her tested for all of the top allegens. Sometimes if they are allergic to one, unfortunately, there may be more. Good luck with this. I know it has completely changed my life around. If she does end up having a food allergy, it will be hard in the beginning, but it does get easier! The important thing is keeping your daughter healthy and safe! I wish you the best!

I would really wait till you see the allergist, if you try to do anything different now it could interfere with the tests they will do and you might not find out what she is allergic to. I would of course stay away from the foods that you know irritate her, but don't try any remedy's till you see the doc. I would also push whoever is making the appointment or go over there heads and call and get her in yourself. She's little she shouldn't have to wait! Good luck
