Food After a Hard Day's Work??

Because I'm drawing a blank on my own...
My husband and a few friends are rebuilding our deck this weekend. It's 90-100 degrees and humid here. What should I feed the crowd of hungry, hard-working men?? I'd like something hearty but not necessarily hot since they'll already be sweaty. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

We enjoy sandwiches (variety of cold cuts, cheeses, veggies, mayos, mustards, etc.) with chips and dips. Nothing fancy but filling after a long hard day. The upshot is the easy clean up easy. Pass out the fancy college china (aka paper plates) and set up a buffet for a group.

I know you said cold but I would do something like pulled pork sandwiches, they're men, I don't think they really care. You can cook it in the crock pot and serve cold stuff on the side (potato salad, cole slaw, pasta salad).

Kielbasa on the grill, corn on the cob, beer, and watermelon.

Seriously, a cold beverage, a cold damp towel to wipe off with then invite them to cool off inside before sitting down to a tasty meal of any temperature.

enjoy your new deck

Many pounds of coldcuts, lettuce, tomato, bacon and rolls for make-your-own sandwiches, and perhaps potato salad, cole slaw and a large watermelon. And a cooler full of iced stuff to drink, whether iced tea or beer.
Or get a bunch of pizza's and eat them inside with the A/C cranked up!

I know it's hot, but bbq is good anytime!
I'd grill up some big, fat, juicy burgers with a cold potato salad and watermelon with some brownies for dessert.

Don't forget the cold beer!

Hi E.-

I would get a platter of COLD cuts...and make 'cold' slaw...'cold' potato salad...and have some rolls, condiments...as well as COLD lettuce, tomatoes and cheese.

Plenty of ice and water.

Maybe run a sprinkler - and let them take a 'cold' off!

Nice of them!
Best Luck!

This is my new favorite: put boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about one per person) in a crock pot, cover with water and add 2 packets of powdered onion soup mix and some salt and pepper. cook on high all day or all night. When its done, just stir with a slotted spoon to break up the meat, scoop out, put on kaiser or large rolls. Add a slice of cheese if you want but these are SOOO GOOOD!!! Men would LOVE them! Serve with some cold sides like macaroni salad, fresh fruit slices, potato salad, etc. Oh yeah, and beer and sodas...and brownies or choc chip cookies for something sweet. =)

I would still do something like pizza and top it off with ice cold watermelon or some other ice cold fruit item.

They will need the carbs from the pizza to keep going whether it will be eaten hot or cooled down.

Cold tortellini salad! It is filling and one of my husband's new favorite dishes:

- packaged cheese tortellini (I like the Bertolli)
- packaged pepperoni sliced and then quartered (we use the turkey)
- can of sliced black olives
- diced green onion
- diced bell pepper
- jar of marinated artichoke hearts diced
- sliced mozzerella
- dressing is 1/3 cup EVOO, 1.5 T balsamic, 1.5 T distilled white vinegar, 1 t Italian seasoning

Chill it and serve it! This particular recipe serves 8.

Maybe a spread of deli meats and cheeses with a few bread choices and condiments to make sandwiches? You could do a few cold salads (pasta, potato, fruit etc.) and chips and plenty of cold drinks.

Fruit salad is always a big hit for men who are working outside. It's cold, tasty and re-hydrating. Cold pasta salad, or barbecue with cold potato salad. Cold veggies & dips, cold cuts & sald fixins, etc. A cold homemade dip and chips.

I love my crock pot. I can make soup in it the day before and serve it up cold with some sandwhiches. But my all time favorite would have to be a tossed salad with a variety of greens, cucumbers, tomatoes, shredded carrots, strawberries, blueberries, mandarin oranges, walnuts, pecans, and toss some grilled chicken breasts and shredded cheeses on top. Yum and filling. For dessert watermelon or some other kinid of melon. Which is particularly hydrating and refreshing.

Cold pasta salads seasoned with French, Italian, or Catalina dressing instead of mayonaise.

I love a chilled tomato basil soup.

Dang now I'm hungry again. Thanks for all the great ideas I won't be feasting on until the weekend. Oh well. It's barbecue again.

my favorite go to is sloppy joes in the crockpot, with cold sides. Althought the pulled pork sure sounds good too. Or the brisket. Very easy way to make a brisket - put your brisket in a pan, turn your oven to 450, cook it for 15 minutes, turn it over, cook 15 minutes. Take it out, cover it tightly, turn your oven down to 175 or 200 and cook 8-10 hours. This can even be done the night before, and cook all night. VERY EASY - just make sure to cook the brisket fat side up.

Cold Cut Sandwhiches are expensive. Deli Meat is $8 a pound. That's more than steak.

It's never too hot for BBQ Brisket.
Make a brisket ahead of time. Slice some and shred some for sandwhiches. = $20
Smoked kielbasa sausage links = $7
Home made potato salad and pinto beans = $5
Hamburger Buns = $5
Ice tea, beer, and watermelon.

Sub sandwiches...go get some hoagie rolls and some regular bread. Put that out with a couple different kinds of meats and cheeses + mayo, mustand, horseradish, pickles, lettuce, tomato, etc. Have a few different chips on hand - maybe a cold pasta salad and/or fruit salad on the side. Throw in some cold beers (if they drink it) and some sodas/water. Nice, easy and COOL after a long day of work. Don't forget the paper plates, etc. for a quick clean up!
