Flying with Six Month Old

I'm taking my son to visit family in Michigan the second week in April (at which point he'll be six months old) and I'm looking for travel tips. I didn't get him his own seat due to finances and it's just going to be the two of us so I'm a little nervous. I know that I'm supposed to get him to either suck on his binky or bottle during take off and landing to try and avoid having his ears get sore but aside from that... I got nothing. I'm going to call his pediatrician and ask what he thinks as well but he doesn't have kids and is probably not totally up on the latest tricks. My son does like to play some of his toys but I'm guessing that he's going to be upset by having to sit on my lap for that long, toys or no toys. By the time we get to Grand Rapids we're going to be totally sick of each other.

What can I do next?

I have a 22 month old little boy and he has been flying with me since he was born. You don't have to buy them a seat until they are two. My suggestion would be to make sure you have a window seat. I always tried to fly around nap time or at least try to keep him awake until the flight left. I also always feed him a bottle right when the plane was taking off and then he would fall asleep. This seemed to work well for me and hopfully it will for you too. Change the diaper right before you get on the plane, its hard to do it in the air plane.

My girls are 7 and 4 and both began flying at 4 months. I used to take their bottles and have them ready to feed when we took off and landed. They had paci's to suck on when needed. Most of the 2 hour flight they would sleep. I took kept them on my lap. I had the car seat checked unless the plane was empty and I could use the seat next to me. Good luck flying, I'm sure you'll be fine.

My husband and I flew to New York at Christmas when our son was six months old, and we also held him on our laps to avoid buying a seat. We gave him a bottle while the plane was taking off both times and it helped with ear pressure. He slept the entire flight going to New York, but was very fussy when we returned and I had to rock him the whole time. We lucked out that he didn't cry and disturb other passengers, but I was very tired when we got off the plane! At six months there's not much else you can do, so good luck and focus on how great introducing your son to your family will be.

I guess you may have already bought tickets, but the only advice I have is to fly around nap time. My son and I have flown twice, once with his own seat and once without. He actually napped on the plane which is very uncharacteristic. Other than that, maybe pack a portable DVD which may keep him entertained for a bit. I hope you have a good trip and this helped a little!

I have a 6 yr. old & a 19 mth old, both who have been flying since birth. What I have learned from experience is to, if at all possible, bring only one carry-on (lrg backpack); carseat, in case the flight is not full you can put him in it, otherwise check it in @ gate; stock up on diapers, formula, extra pacifier, change of clothes, etc. You never know what is going to happen, so be prepared. Also, if you have one, I found it easier to get around w/ them in one of those backpack carriers (front), gives you a little more freedom. Do not forget his birth cert, some airlines will ask for them, make sure both of your shoes are easy to get on & off. He will have to take his off too. I think that about covers it. Good luck!
