Is it safe to fly at the end of your 10th week of pregnancy? Most things say it is safe during second trimester. Does anyone know? Or has anyone flown while in their first trimester?

What can I do next?

Perfectly safe. My friend is a flight attendant and she flew until her 3rd trimester, actually, her 8th month. Congratulations

I flew at 15 weeks pregnant (just into my 2nd trimester) and my cousin flew at 8 weeks with no problems. As long as everything is progressing well, and you OB/GYN or midwife has no objections, it should be fine.

I flew up until six months so there should be no problems. The elevation did make my nausea worse so keep the barf bag close - I threw up everytime I flew in my first trimester!

You're fine. It's a concern only if you dont want to barf on the plane. (and in the 3rd trimester, have a child-birth drama on the plane. Maybe you'd name your child Delta? or maybe Ted??) :-)

Hi R.,

I flew during my first trimester -- I was about 9 or 10 weeks pregnant and I was just fine. I just made sure that I did not lift any heavy luggage or anything like that. The more bothersome air travel was during my 28th week of pregnancy -- that, I do not advise ;-) Best wishes for safe travel for you and your little one to come.

I actually found out I was pregnant the day before a trip to Maui. So I was roughly 4 weeks along. I had no issues I was told to move a lot because of risk of blood clots in the legs. I was flying from AZ so it was a 5 hour flight I did fine. I also flew around my 10 week my baby is fine and healthy and also a frequent flier!
Hope this helps!

Hi R.,

I flew a lot during my pregnancy (up to the last week they will allow you to!). The advice I got was that as long as you aren't at risk during your pregnancy it's basically safe. Sometime you are told not to fly before 12 weeks because of the risk of miscarriage - not that the flying will cause it but because miscarriage during the first 12 weeks is not uncommon and docs feel it's better if that doesn't take place on a plane. If the flight is relatively short I wouldn't be too worried but call your doc if you are! Congrats!

I've only heard that high elevations and changes in air pressure and oxygen supply can occasionally start labor in the third trimester but that airplanes are pressurized so it's just a precaution now-a-days. But travel can stress a mom out and that too can start labor ... but again, that's in the last trimester.

Hi R.,

I flew throughout my pregnancy for work, up until about 2 weeks before my due date even. I think as long as you are not high risk or anything it should be completely fine.

Hi R.,

Definitely talk to your doctor. Mine said it was best to fly during the second trimester, but we had already booked a flight to see my in-laws when I found out I was pregnant. I flew at 8 weeks and everything was fine. My doctor just told me to get up every now and then and drink lots of fluids.

Yes, it's safe to fly in your first trimester. I think when they say it's safe to fly in the second trimester, they mean it as opposed to the third, not the first. I flew twice in my first trimester, to no ill effect.

My job requires me to travel nationwide. I literally was flying 6-8 round trips a week until I hit 32 weeks of pregnancy. I was simply too worn out and swollen to do it anymore. The doctor also wanted me "land bound" as I was getting over pneumonia. You can safely fly during pregnancy (up until 34 weeks) but keep in mind that if you have any sort of morning sickness, flying will exacerbate it. Ask for a lot of gingerale and make sure you have barf bags. Good luck!

I was flying in my 6th month. Check with you MD and the airline you are going to fly with. Most airlines will not allow you to fly past your 7th month. Hope this helps.

I flew this Thanksgiving at about 10.5 weeks, and I was fine. I was cleared by my doctor to do so. You should talk to your doctor to be sure that there are no risks specifically for you. Congrats on your pregnancy!

Hi- I found out I was pregnant and was leaving in two weeks for Vegas to go to a fitness convention and work out harder than I used to (at that point- oh how my baby slowed that down in many ways;0) Anyway, it was totally fine but I agree that if it is a longer flight, getting up regularly just to keep you r circulation moving better is probably good....if you can go to your ob before your trip, just let tham know and be safe. Lots of exciting days ahead....
take care!

First trimester air travel should not be an issue unless your OB has specifically said not to due to some medical problem. I flew in the first trimester with no issues other than my usual 24/7 morning sickness.

You'll be fine - maybe a little nauseated so ask for ginger ale or chamomile tea for the flight. AND you'll have to pee from the pressure of take-off and landing so get an aisle seat.
Bon Voyage!

Hi R.,

It is safe to fly during the 1st and 2nd trimester. Drs don't recommend you flying at all during the third trimester. (6-9 months of pregnancy)

Yes, it's safe to fly that early in the pregnancy. At this point, you're probably feeling really fatigued anyways, so just pick a comfortable seat and you may just sleep the whole trip. (that's what happened to me when I flew during the first trimester). It's not recommended to fly only during the last trimester because the air pressure changes during the flight can induce labor (that's what I heard). However, I know quite a few women who also flew safely at that time.
Good luck!

Hi R.,

My understanding is that there is nothing 'unsafe' about flying when pregnant (for the mom or baby). They simply restrict it in the third trimester in order to reduce the chances of a woman going into premature labor during the flight.

I flew during all three of my pregnancies with no ill-effect.

Hi R.,
I had a job during both pregnancies where I had to travel all the time. I flew from the very start up until a few weeks before my babies were born. The only drawback to flying during the first trimester is if you have really bad morning sickness... see if you can sit close to the restroom, and/or keep the barf bag handy. (Sorry to be gross, but that was the only bad part about flying, or really doing anything, during the first trimester!) Happy travels!

I flew very early (less than 8 weeks) and continued having to fly for work into the beginning of my third trimester and never had any problems. You should speak with your own doctor. Your doctor can tell you of any special concerns there might be.

I flew during my first trimester and had no problems. I think it's risky during the end of your third only because you have a chance of going into labor during the flight. I wouldn't worry if I were you.

I believe the concern is when you are in your 3rd trimester. But it really is a question for your doctor.

HI R.,
I suppose as long as your pregnancy is uncomplicated and the doctor says it is OK you are good to fly. I flew on weekly business trips up until 4 weeks before my son was born. No problem.

Good luck,

I flew to Hong Kong (and back) when I was 5 months pregnant, and everything was just fine (though maybe a bit uncomfortable). My understanding is that unless you have a high risk pregnancy, there is no problem with flying. I am aware that at least some airlines have a cut off where they do not want you on their airplane after a certain week of pregnancy (it's in the third trimester, check with your airline for more info).
