Hi I'm flying to Michigan for Thanksgiving and taking our 4 month old boy. To prevent his ears from popping or hurtig at what point during the flight do I start to breastfeed him to avoid the popping? Also any other ideas would be great. He will be sitting on my lap.

What can I do next?

there are kid size airplane earplugs (make sure it's ok to use on 4 month old). i have used those since my kids were 1. always great
when i traveled with infant kids i always made sure the next bottle they took was during take off and then again during landing. it's important that they are swallowing during that time. never had problems with ears although one of mine is notorious for having ear problems otherwise.
good luck

i always wait until the pilot says "flight attendants please preapare" b/c then you know you are on the runway ready to take off. You dont want your son to have eaten already and not be hungry during take off.

I have found if I could get my son to fall asleep before we land, the landing does not bother him as much!!

Good luck and try to get a row with an empty seat (if any) You can change when you get to the airport!!

Give him a bottle, pacifier or breastfeed him during takeoff and landing and this will naturally help his ears relieve the pressure.

Hi R., i travelled with my daughter to India (17 hours of flying) when she was 4 months.. a couple of things helped me... feed during landing and take off... i found it best to start when the pilot made the announcement for the staff to be prepared for landing/takeoff... incase she did not want to feed... i would hug her, with her head on my shoulder and close her other ear with my finger...

it also helps to give her somehting to suck on...

if you have turbulance on the flight, make sure you hold her tight and also close her ears then...

i wasnt able to find ear plugs for a baby that young.. so instead i put cotton balls into the ears (just make sure u dont push them in to deep)...

good luck with the trip :)
