If he is bottle fed --- feed him on the plane. It will help the air pressure in the ears to prevent problems. If he takes a pacifier --- make sure to have it. Try to keep him awake until the flight and hopefully he will nap the entire flight.
My son (10 months) and I are flying back home in a couple weeks. This is a first for him and it's a 3 hour flight. Any advice?
Thanks for your help!

S., we just came back from a vacation in Florida. Our flight was a bit over 2 hours each way. My son is 5 months old.
Before we went on vacation, Tommy had got sick, so I had seen his doctor right away and started him on antibiotics. He seemed to have got better before the flight.
Something that we learned about traveling with a baby: If you are breastfeeding, find out from the airport Information if they have any unisex bathrooms or special Nursery rooms.
Once you get on the plane, ask the crew if they have any extra seats so you put your baby down for a nap. Also ask your pediatritian if you can give the baby any kind of medication (anti-histamine) that would make the baby sleepy or at least calm. Above all, don't feel guilty if the baby cries. Other passengers will get over it.
Good luck!

I flew with my 11mnth old. I took alot of books and a bottle for him to drink for take off and landing. He did much better then I thought he would. Don't be nervous it goesby so quick!
Snacks, lots of favorite toys, books and something for him to chew or suck on to equalize his ears, when your ears start to pop on the plane so will his! You may want to ask your pediatrician but mine suggested benedryl or a medication that makes him a little sleepy so he will nap on the plane.
Plan your flight for when your baby normally has a feeding. When the plane takes off, nurse your baby or give him a bottle. The sucking will help his ears pop.
I flew out to California a couple years ago with my husband and two daughters. At the time they were 5 mths old and a year and a half. It was a nine hour flight with two layovers(thankfully short). i would say be prepared for anything. Take a couple of changes of clothes(the kids and i got motion sick and needless to say used those bags they have on the plain in case you need them, and i have never been sick on a plain before). the kids also get bored realy quick so i would advise getting a few little toys from the store that are new to your baby to keep her interested in them a little longer. We stopped by target and grabbed some new things for the flight home and that did wonders. people will suggest to use a snuggly for the baby, makes getting on and off the plain easier, but when we flew we were not able to use it in our seats. take bags to put dirty diapers in because you really won't have too many places to dispose of them right away, and there is no room in the bathroom on the plain to change a diaper. Thats the best i can do..Good luck and have fun..remember the calmer you are about the flight the more likely the trip will run smooth for the both of you.
