I've scheduled for my 8-mo. old son to get a flu shot. I've heard the pros & cons, but I'm still worried that he might get sick from the vaccine. Has anyone had a bad/good experience w/this?

What can I do next?

Hi, I tentatively took my girl in for her 1st flu shot, and she had no bad reaction. She's even allergic to egg, dr. said to go ahead and do it and she's fine. A few days later, she had some sniffles but I don't think they are related to the shot.

Hope it works out.

I dont know if this will help you but my son is 2 1/2 years old, I never wanted to give him the flu shot even though the doctor really insisted since he was 8 months old. He got the flu shot yesterday and I was expecting a bad reaction or atleast a fever, but he had nothing, not even changed his mood and not a low fever. I just hope it really helps.

My baby then 1 had no problems with the flu shot. Everyone is diffent though, but I would rather my baby have some flu symptoms than get the full blown flu. I sympathize with your concerns though!

Hi Cindy
I am the mom of 4 and a Pediatric RN. I work in a private practice office and have for 13 years. I have never seen an infant get sick from the flu shot. Maybe a slight runny nose and a low grade temp for 2 days, but it really doesn't phase them. I HAVE seen infants admitted to the hospital for the flu when they get dehydrated or have breathing problems b/c of the cough.
I really really recommend the immunization. After 2 years, if healthy it isn't such a big deal. But this year and next... do it :)

IF you have any questi0ons please feel free to e-mail me.

My daughter wasn't sick from any of her shots including the flu shot. At worst she would be a little irritable - never sickly!

My kids are 4 and 1 and we have never had a problem with flu shots. In our experience the other vaccines have caused more discomfort than the flu shot. (Neither of my kids seemed to be pained by the flu shot either, especially compared to something like the chicken pox vaccination).I know many people are against unnecessary vaccinations but the flu strains can be quite debilitating. I think the shots are worth it. Just make sure your child doesn't have any egg allergy and you should be OK. I also recommend giving your child a dose of Tylenol or Motrin about an hour before the shots; that way it has kicked in before any other discomfort. Good luck. In the end I would also say don't do anything you aren't comfortable with, especially when it is voluntary.

I have twins that were VERY premie. They are scheduled to get their flu shot and I think that it is a VERY good idea. Look at the alternative. A baby who is grumpy for a day or two or a possible VERY ill child if he/she becomes ill with the flu. Make sure to go to your pediatrician- and they will schedule the correct dosage!

My doctor said that my daughter(15mo)
might get a small case of the flu even with the flu shot, but she should not get a really bad case of it.

My 8 month old daughter received the flu shot. She only cried for a little bit right after the shot (similar reaction as with other vaccines). Later that day she did get a little bit of a temperature but nothing of concerned. I gave her some tylenol and she slept alot that afternoon. The next day she was perfectly fine. She has to get the next dose Nov 4. I would recommend you get it for your baby and for yourself. If he gets the flu, he is going to miserable for a lot longer, could end up in the hosipital or worse.

According to a new recommendation issued this year by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the CDC's Advisory Panel of Immunization Practices, even healthy babies aged 6 months to 2 years should be vaccinated. Previous guidelines only recommended the vaccine for young children at increased risk for flu-related complications, such as those with asthma or other lung conditions.

Experts say family members and caregivers of young infants should be vaccinated to reduce the risk of spreading the virus to infants.

Hello!
My 2 year old and 10 month old both got flu shots about 3 weeks ago and neither one had any side effects from the shot. Our pediatrician highly recommended having them get it.
