My husband is breaking away from his company and going to be working for himself. Bad thing is, we are going to lose our group health insurance :( I was told Florida Healthy Kids is a great insurance company. I, personally, don't know anything about it.

Can you please tell me more....
-Can anyone child get coverage?
-Is it really a good insurance?
-How much do doctor visits run you? Specialists?
-Are prescriptions cheap?
-Is it worth it to attach the dental plan to it?

Thank you!

Their website has answers your questions; except perhaps if it is 'good' because that is subjective.

If it's like Healthy Kids here in California:
- you to have to meet income limits for her to qualify, too much money/family income and they feel you can go out and buy another insurance
- it was excellent insurance, we got to choose her doctor and HMO from the list of paticipating ones they gave us, had she become seriously ill she would have gone to CHOC (Children's Hospital Orange County), an excellent hospital here in SoCal
- coverage cost $7 per month, (they based it on income and it could have been as low as $3, no higher than $7) and we made quarterly payments
- doctor visits were all the same, her ped or a specialist, $5
- all her prescriptions were covered and free or no more than $4
- dental was included but I would imagine it would be reasonable and helpful to add

We priced it out and ended up getting a better rate through Florida Blue Cross/ Blue Shield when we considered my husband's health coverage as well.

I have benefits through work for me, but it would be astronomical to add them to mine, so we got various quotes (including Healthy Kids) for the two and my husband. Florida BCBS came back as the best "package" deal for us, so don't rule out private insurance!

Hi there,

My daughter is on Healthy Kids. First, you should know that "Healthy Kids" is the name of the state administration program. Once you have been approved for the program, you select an insurance company based on which companies serve the area you live in. Where we live the options are United Healthcare or Healthease Kids. I have used both programs and they are about equal.

Any child in the state of Florida can get on the Healthy Kids program. However, the monthly premium is based on your household income and the size of your family. The subsidized premiums are $15 per household per month, $20 per household per month or full pay, which is about $150 per CHILD per month. The coverage and co-pays are the same no matter what your premium.

As far as whether or not this is good insurance, I have not had any problems with taking my daughter to specialist, the emergency room or her PCP. With the Healthease plan that we have, I don't pay any co-pay for the PCP. Specialist visits are $5, ER visits are $10 and prescriptions are $5. Hospital admissions have no co-pay.

I have not used the dental plan as we have a children's dental clinic here that is free, so I can't speak to the dental plan.

We have been very happy with Healthy Kids. The big sticking point for a lot of people is the subsidized vs unsubsidized premiums. If you make over 200% above the poverty line for the size of your family, that $150 per child can get expensive if you have more than 1 child.

Good Luck,

J.

Yes, any child can get coverage. You must first NOT have insurance. You cannot apply until you loose your insurance from your husbands company. Even if he can get insurance later, once your child has it, they can keep it. It is worth the money and if you have to pay full price it is $166 per child. Everything is covered! I love it. Not all pediatricians are on their plan, but going to the doctor now has no copays, and that includes specialists! My son has Type 1 Diabetes and it covers everything he needs! All prescriptions have a $5 copay. Dental and vision is included. Finding a dentist was a little harder for me, but they cover all visits with no copay as well. They cover everything that they need. I highly recommend it, it has been a life saver for us financially.
